On the Hedge

Here at Richborough Roman Fort we believe in the importance of looking after the diversity of animal life that have made their home amongst the ancient ruins.

This month we’ve added a house for hedgehogs. Designed to keep the animals safe and warm it is now nestling amongst bushes and trees we’re hoping a hog will adopt this home soon.

The new Hedgehog house was made by one of our very talented volunteers over at Walmer Castle Garden team

Lewis holes

These holes were chiselled into the centre of the heavy stone blocks and by the use of Lewis Keys enabled them to be lifted and positioned into place by a wooden crane .

The secure grip tightens as the metal keys expand under tension in the hole.

This technology originally used by the Egyptians was later adapted by the Romans.

Speak to one of our friendly knowledgeable volunteers during your visit to pick up some interesting facts during your visit

James our site manager taking one of our new kites for a test run 🤭

YES! You heard us correctly ...KITES 🪁

The Romans were thought to use "windsock" Banners, typically depicting Dragons. Typically used as a military banner that behaved similar to a kite

So, to add a little bit of fun to your visit, we now have a little range of kites for you to loan during your visit. So if you fancy having a little fun, no matter your age or ability please ask at the visitor centre to collect one and have a go!

The team will direct you to a safe area to fly, close to the car park away from the walls and the ditches🫶🏽

So why not come and fly a kite 🪁

Constructed in 1929-1930 our timber building, faced externally with wavy Elm is the building that houses the Museum, our shop and Education space.

It's believed to be the earliest surviving custodians house in the National Heritage Collection, a space that was purpose built to house, display and secure some of the finds at Richborough which had begun outgrowing the temporary huts in the 1920s
