Recently we had a chance to prepare 'Helios' by Gillian Ayres, 1990, from Leeds Museums and Galleries for a loan.

We cleaned the intricate impastoed paint layers, the reverse and attached a stretcherbar lining to reduce vibrations during travel. Such a joyous painting to work on!

Meet Barrington Bourchier MP (1627-1680) by an unknown artist, from Beningbrough - National Trust.

This over-door portrait came to our studio for conservation recently. Little did we know that the very thick, aged varnish and over-paint layers were covering extensive splatters of old decorator's paint, and most surprisingly the sitter's hand! ✋🏼

Never a dull day! ✋🏼

1 - After treatment
2 - Before treatment
3 - Half way through varnish and over-paint removal
4 - Hand ✋🏼 emerging during cleaning
5 - Detail of underlying decorator's paint splatters
