Just a notice that Tavistock Museum will be closed for Goose Fair on Wednesday next week!

However, we are still open on Tuesday and Thursday until Saturday, 11am - 3pm.

✨️ WE NEED YOUR HELP✨️

Tavistock Museum are looking for book donations to help towards fundraising for our charity.

For anyone who may not know, the museum is ran entirely by volunteers and your donations mean we can keep operating and helping to keep the towns history alive 🫶

Some of our fundraising money comes from book donations, of which we are currently running low on! So, if you possibly have any unwanted, good condition books we would really appreciate it if you could bring them in to us during opening hours ☺️

🤔 ... Interesting times in the Tavistock Museum this week!

‼️BBC crew filming about Tavistock's ties to the Bayeaux Tapestry‼️ Yes, really!

In the mid 1800s, Tavistock's very own Mrs (Anna) Eliza Bray, wife of the Town's vicar, Revd Edward Atkyns Bray, was accused of stealing a piece of the tapestry for a souvenir on an earlier trip to France with a previous husband, an antiquarian artist, Charles Alfred Stothard. 😲 But was it Eliza, or was it Charles???

🪿Tavistock's Goose Fair 🪿

The annual Goose Fair (previously known as 'Michaelmas' or ' St. Joan's Fair') is set to return on 14th October but how much do you know about the town's traditional Goose Fair?

Originally held annually on September 29th to celebrate 'Michaelmas' in honour of St Michael, after some 500 (or so) years and a change of calender (now using the Gregorian calender), in 1752, Goose Fair was moved to the 10th of October. Then, in 1823, it was moved to the second Wednesday of October, as we know it today.

Locals would come from many places to sell livestock - predominantly geese - and customers would come to find their perfect Christmas goose!

A positive time financially for trading harvest and healthy livestock, it was also a popular social event.

~ Rounding off Tavistock Museum 's Heritage Open Days for 2026 ~ This Saturday, come and see Tavistock Abbey's last Abbot, John Peryn, as he tells visitors his story. Pensioned off by King Henry VIII, as opposed to a somewhat horrible alternative!
