Bluebell Railway Museum and Archive

Bluebell Railway Museum and Archive The Bluebell Railway Museum and Archive hold a wealth of interesting items and material from the Bluebell Railway and the Southern Railways of England.

The Bluebell Railway Museum tells the story of the Lewes to East Grinstead Railway line and illustrates the history of railways in the South of England
The museum was opened on 23 June 2011 by Lord Faulkner of Worcester, president of the Heritage Railway Association. The museum at Sheffield Park tells the story of the Bluebell Railway, which began as the Lewes and East Grinstead Railway (LEGR) in

1882, being taken over by the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSCR) a year later. It also outlines how railways developed from the horse drawn railways of the 1600s, to steam locomotives and then electric trains. The tenacity and diligence of those responsible for acquiring the items which record the history of railways in Southern England has resulted in one of the finest collections available and one which is of national importance.

On Wednesday 3rd June a new exhibition was opened in the Museum. It adds to the permanent Woking Homes exhibit by showing some items from the London & South Western Orphanage which predated Woking Homes. The exhibition will be on show until September. Henry the Collecting Dog from the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway visited along with his apprentice Bertie. The pictures show (a) John, Henry, Bertie and London Jack. (b) Henry about to get his latest medal from Sarah, Woking Homes CEO, having collected £5k. (c) The new display which includes many items over 100 years old and never been on public display before.

Congratulations to Southern Locomotives Limited on Eddystone's successful trip with the 'Great Britain' rail tour on 18/19 April. Paddington to Penzance, then Penzance to Chester could be a two day mileage record for preserved steam on the Main Line. (Don't forget the trip from Penzance to Par and back to turn). The picture from the Southern Railways Archive shows Eddystone in May 1962 near Millbrook with an inter regional service to Bournemouth. Photo by Joe Kent.
