To break ranks in Sparta was worse than to die.⚔️

Spartan endurance wasn't about tolerating pain, it was about never letting go of the man next to you. In the phalanx, each shield covered half of his brother's body, so one man stepping back or lunging forward didn't just expose himself — he opened a hole that could kill the entire line. That's why the Agoge beat self-preservation out of them from childhood; they were trained to endure exhaustion, wounds, and terror without flinching, because discipline was the weapon. If a Spartan broke, he wasn't just a coward, he was a traitor to the wall, and he would return home to atimia (Shame)— stripped of citizenship, shamed, unmarriageable — if he returned at all.

The word Κένταυρος is present in Homer's epics, where the Centaurs are associated with Mount Pelion in Thessaly. Homer also calls them Φῆρες (Phēres), essentially "wild beasts."
