One of my favourite castles in County Clare is Dysert O’Dea, tucked into the countryside near Corofin.

What makes it special for me is what happens when you step inside. Rather than wandering through an empty ruin, you can climb through restored rooms and get a real sense of how people once lived inside an Irish tower house.

And the story stretches far beyond the castle walls. The surrounding landscape contains centuries of Irish history, including ancient monuments, a medieval church and the site of the Battle of Dysert O’Dea in 1318.

I’ve visited many castles around Ireland, but this is one I never seem to tire of.

I’ve written about its history, restoration and some of my own experiences there in the latest James’ Journal:

One of the many paths in County Galway's Coole Park, former home of Lady Gregory, and ground zero for Ireland's Literary Revival of the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Nestled in a valley below Ballinalacken Castle, this white farmhouse enjoys one of the finest backdrops in County Clare. Beyond the trees, the Atlantic shimmers beneath a sky that never looks quite the same twice.

Doonagore Castle stands proudly above Doolin, County Clare, where centuries of history meet sweeping views of the Atlantic. Few landmarks capture the enduring spirit of Ireland's west coast quite like this.

Autumn quietly settles into Kilrush, County Clare, as a golden tree transforms the simple blue bench beneath it into the best seat in town. Sometimes all you need is a place to pause and watch the seasons change.

Against the backdrop of a spectacular sunrise, birds gather atop a power pole near my home in Kildysart, County Clare, quietly surveying their domain as another day begins across the Irish countryside.

Sunbeams break through the clouds to spotlight a quiet field along Ireland's Shannon Estuary. Fleeting moments like this remind me that nature always knows where to place the light. See Beauty Everywhere.

There’s something wonderfully cosy about an old Irish kitchen, where a solid-fuel range replaced the open hearth and became the warm heart of the home. Cooking, heating water and keeping the chill away -- all from one hardworking stove. You can almost feel the warmth in this room.
