Mid-March this year we recalled the results of archaeological surveys at the street. Krzywej 37 in Chełm from 1997-1998. One of the photographs featured a stone plate found during research.

Today, thanks to the kindness and unselfish help of Professor Andrzej Trzci liwoski, we can present the translation of the inscription from the blackboard, which turned out to be a maceva.

The fragmently preserved maceva comes from the grave of Chana or Chawa bat Moshe segal, who died in 5417. , always. between 19 September 1656 and on September 7, 1657 , "the modest lady (... ) whose soul came out in holiness, according to a short account".

We also present a second table, which unfortunately didn't survive until modern times. Known only from 1930s photography. XX w. it was placed in the men's room on the eastern pillar supporting the vault of the room, from the bima side.

Translated also by Professor Andrzej Trzci kenski, the inscription contains fragments of the Ashkenazian synagogue liturgy. At the top is Jehi racon's prayer on Rosz Chodesz - said during the new moon blessing. At the bottom are the blessings recited while reading the Torah (put on the bim) - Berach on the right, Birkat ha-gomel on the left.

The plaque was founded by Yehuda son of Chajim in 5574, according to the Gregorian calendar since September 25, 1813. until September 14, 1814 The plaque got lost in the Second World War, during the destruction of a synagogue by the Germans.
