During World War II I was in evacuation, where my little sister died. After the war, my father was also gone. Since the age of 13, I have been engaged in the only thing I love, creating life on the canvas. In 1949, I enrolled in the Yelets Art Sch

ool, where I studied under outstanding A. Kurnakov, V. Dudchenko and B. Since the end of the 1950s I began to create a Jewish series of paintings, which I am still working on. In 1960-1962, I lived and worked in the studio of N.N. Zhukov, National Artist of the USSR. In 1964, I joined the Union of Artists of the USSR. Since 1980, I lived and worked in Kyiv. Member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. In 2008 I was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine. In 2022 the war came to Ukraine again and today I continue my artistic journey in Israel, with an immense gratitude to my historical homeland and an immense pain for Ukraine. My paintings appear in Kyiv National Museum of Modern Art, National Museum "Kyiv Picture Gallery" (Kyiv National Museum of Russian Art), Ukrainian National Museum of Literature, Sholom Aleichem Museum, USSR Academy of Sciences, as well as in private collections in USA, UK, France, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Australia, Greece, and Israel.

Dear friends, let me tell you about one of my works - "Motl Boy." I painted it in 2002, and honestly, remembering this piece always brings me joy.

Motl is a character from Sholem Aleichem — the boy who, despite all his troubles, looked at life with remarkable joy. You know, there are people who manage to find happiness where, by all rights, there shouldn't be any. That's how I set out to paint him.

I wanted this painting to feel warm. Not sadness for what's gone, but real warmth - like remembering something from childhood.

You know, I myself caught a little of that life Sholem Aleichem wrote about - through stories, through people I knew. And for me, Motl is more than just a character from a book — he's something very personal, something close to home. Maybe that's why this piece turned out the way it did.

I'll be glad if it reminds you of something too.

For many years, Jerusalem came to me in dreams. I dreamed of its streets, its stones, its scents, its sounds, its people. I first saw Jerusalem with my own eyes at 88, when I made aliyah. And it was exactly as I had imagined it: deeply familiar, and at the same time magnificent.

I left my childhood home twice.
Once as a boy in 1941.
And again as an old man in 2022.

This time, I came home.

Israel turns 78 this week.
I turn 93 this year.
In some way, we have walked the same road.
