Have you ever visited the Taj Mahal in India?

I did, 8 years ago! And deep down I wanted to paint it ever since. 🙂
I just never felt prepared until now.

P.S: that’s me in the second pic and I cannot explain what the vibe about this place is.

Hi! I’m Shabnoor and I realized a little reintroduction is due.

I’m a Chartered Accountant, Fashion & Art enthusiast, a mother of 3 and I’ve been told I cook well too.

It’s been 5 years since I started creating art full time. Art has definitely shaped who I am, how I look at things and often times it has been my medium of expression for things you cannot put into words.

I’m self taught and I’ve always been passionate about creative stuff. Im a traditional artist with deeper interest in Islamic art and design, spiritual art and Islamic Calligraphy.

If any of this seems to be of interest to you, let’s connect!

Masnavi by Rumi : Song of the Reed

When I first came across this Masnavi, it hit the spot for me. I wanted to utilize it as an inspiration for one of my Dervish works, but I didn’t find a better way to do it than inscribe some of my favorite lines from the same.

This poetry is in the Persian language, so I’ll break it down here - transliteration followed by the translation.

Beshno Az ney, chun hikayat mi konad
(Listen to the reed, how it tells a tale)
Az jodaai ha shikayat mi konad
(For it is complaining of separations)
Kaz nayastan ta-mara babreedah
(Ever since they cut me down from the forest)
Dar nafeedam mardo-zan naleedah andh
(My wail has caused men and women to weep)
Seenah khwaham sharhah-sharhah az firaaq
(I want a heart torn from separation)
Ta bagoyam sharh darde ishteyaq
(So that I can tell the pain of passion)
Har kasi ko door mand az asl kheesh
(Whoever stays far from their roots)
Baz joyad rozgare wasl kheesh
(Longs to return to that state of union)
Atish ast in bang nay neest bad
(The sound of the reed is fire, not wind)
Har ki an atish nadarad neest bad
(Whoever does not have this fire becomes nothing)
Atish ishq ast kandar nee fitad
(It is the fire of love that is in the reed)
Joshishe ishq ast kandar mi fitad
(It is the get out of love that is in the drink)
Ni hadeese rah pur-khun mi konad
(The reed tells of the way full of blood)
Kast hay ishq majnoon mi konad
(And recounts stories of the passion of Majnoon)
Roz-ha gar raft goro bak neest
(If days are gone, let them go, for it does not matter)
Toh beman aey an keh chon toh paak neest
(But you remain, for nothing is as pure as you)
Dar naya badhaal pokhta heech kham
(The raw does not understand the state of the ripe)
Pas sakhan kotah baayad wassalam x2
(Therefore my words must be brief, farewell)x2
