Rooted in centuries-old Sufi tradition, Mondino’s Dervishes translate the ritual of the sema—the whirling dance practiced by Turkish Mevlevi dervishes—into a pictorial language. Painted on linoleum, the rotating figures embody a dialogue between spiritual discipline and artistic gesture, where repetition and circular movement become visual meditation.

First developed in the early 1990s, the Dervishes series reached a pivotal moment in 1993 at the Venice Biennale, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva. On that occasion, Mondino expanded the work beyond painting, presenting a live performance with a group of whirling dancers from Turkey, reinforcing the historical and ritual origins of the imagery.

Radicati in una tradizione sufi secolare, i Dervisci di Mondino traducono il rituale del sema — la danza roteante praticata dai dervisci mevlevi turchi — in un linguaggio pittorico. Dipinte su linoleum, le figure in rotazione incarnano un dialogo tra disciplina spirituale e gesto artistico, in cui la ripetizione e il movimento circolare diventano meditazione visiva.

Sviluppata all’inizio degli anni Novanta, la serie dei Dervisci raggiunge un momento centrale nel 1993 alla Biennale di Venezia, curata da Achille Bonito Oliva. In quell’occasione Mondino estende il lavoro oltre la pittura, presentando una performance dal vivo con un gruppo di danzatori rotanti provenienti dalla Turchia, rafforzando le origini storiche e rituali dell’immaginario.

Grazie di cuore a tutti che hanno partecipato all’apertura del nuovo spazio Woolbridge | Via Vescovado e all’inaugurazione della mostra “Senza Tempo”.

Woolbridge | Via Vescovado è uno spazio dedicato principalmente alla litografia, ai disegni dal Settecento al Novecento (1700 - 1960), alle stampe, agli arazzi antichi, ai tappeti e ai mobili di pregio, in dialogo con una selezione di opere moderne e contemporanee di artisti come Leonor Fini, Giorgio de Chirico, Lorenzo Puglisi, Yang Liming e Aldo Mondino.

Questo sarà il nostro spazio invernale: venite a trovarci.
La galleria resterà aperta fino a domenica 21 dicembre.
Ci rivediamo il 7 gennaio!

Woolbridge | Via Vescovado 11 C is a space primarily dedicated to lithography, drawings from the 18th to the 20th century (1700 - 1960), prints, antique tapestries, rugs, and fine furniture, in dialogue with a selection of modern and contemporary works by artists such as Leonor Fini, Giorgio de Chirico, Lorenzo Puglisi, Yang Liming, and Aldo Mondino.

This will be our winter space, come and visit us.
The gallery will remain open until Sunday, December 21.

Nel nostro nuovo spazio in Via Vescovado a Biella, Woolbridge Gallery è lieta di presentare una selezione di opere che abbraccia oltre 250 anni, dal 1769 al 2025. Attraverso diversi media tra cui incisione, olio su tela, arazzo e scultura “Senza Tempo” offre un percorso attraverso la creazione artistica nei secoli.

In our new space on Via Vescovado in Biella, Woolbridge Gallery is pleased to present a selection of works spanning over 250 years, from 1769 to 2025. Through diverse media including etching, oil on canvas, tapestry, and sculpture, “Senza Tempo” offers a passage through artistic creation across centuries.

Francesco Piranesi (1758/59–1810)
Incisore, acquafortista e architetto italiano e il talentuoso figlio del leggendario Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Seguendo le orme del padre, realizzò splendide incisioni di antichi monumenti e templi.

Trascorse molti anni in Francia, continuando il suo lavoro artistico anche durante le turbolenze della Rivoluzione francese. Una vita segnata dall’arte, dalla storia e da profondi cambiamenti.

Dal 1781 fino agli anni Novanta, e poi anche in Francia, la calcografia Piranesi diretta da Francesco pubblicò una serie di raccolte di statue antiche, note anche come “Choix des meilleurs statues antiques”.
Le incisioni furono realizzate da diversi maestri dell’epoca, tra cui Tommaso Piroli, Ludovico Carazzari, Bernardino Nocchi, Giovanni Volpato, Domenico Cunego e altri.

Le dediche risalgono al 1785, quando Francesco era in contatto con Zulian e tentava di vendere i marmi alla Russia.

Francesco Piranesi (1758/59–1810) was an Italian engraver, etcher, and architect and the talented son of the legendary Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Following in his father’s footsteps, he created stunning engravings of ancient monuments and temples.

He spent many years in France, continuing his artistic work even through the turbulence of the French Revolution. A life shaped by art. From 1781 through the 1790s, and later also in France, the Piranesi print workshop directed by Francesco published a series of collections of ancient statues, also known as “Choix des meilleurs statues antiques.”

The engravings were produced by several masters of the time, including Tommaso Piroli, Ludovico Carazzari, Bernardino Nocchi, Giovanni Volpato, Domenico Cunego, and others.

The dedications date to 1785, when Francesco was in contact with Zulian and attempting to sell the marbles to Russia.

Nel 1931 Leonor Fini si trasferì a Parigi, dove conobbe Max Ernst, gli artisti surrealisti e lo scrittore francese André Pieyre de Mandiargues. Leonor Fini fu anche amica di Elsa Schiaparelli, che la introdusse nel mondo della moda.
Espose alla galleria Jacques Bonjean, diretta da Christian Dior. Quest’opera appartiene al suo periodo provocatorio e raffigura una cortigiana dotata di autonomia, mistero e autorità. Ci troviamo alla fine della prima fase dell’artista (fortemente influenzata da Picasso), che sarebbe poi stata seguita dal suo periodo surrealista. Il dipinto si colloca sulla soglia di questa trasformazione, fondendo il rigore classico con l’atmosfera enigmatica che sarebbe diventata la sua cifra distintiva.

In 1931 Leonor Fini moved to Paris, where she met Max Ernst, the Surrealist artists, and the French writer André Pieyre de Mandiargues. Leonor Fini was also friends with Elsa Schiaparelli, who introduced her to the world of fashion.
She exhibited at the Jacques Bonjean gallery, directed by Christian Dior. This work belongs to her provocative period and depicts a courtesan with autonomy, mystery, and authority. We are at the end of the artist’s first phase (strongly influenced by Picasso), which would be followed by her Surrealist period. The painting stands at the threshold of this transformation, blending classical rigor with the enigmatic atmosphere that would become her signature.

Appena inaugurata in dialogo con la mostra “Andy Warhol. Pop Art & Textiles” e visitabile fino a marzo 2026, la mostra “Sacro, Profano, Umano” di Lorenzo Puglisi e Andy Warhol è allestita nella Chiesa del Santo Sudario, un edificio del XVI secolo. Mettendo a confronto l’icona moderna di Marilyn Monroe con la personale interpretazione della Gioconda di Puglisi, simbolo del Rinascimento, la mostra diventa un affascinante dialogo tra il maestro della Pop Art e un artista la cui immaginazione attinge profondamente ai soggetti biblici.

Collocata tra le due opere, nel cuore della mostra, la reinterpretazione di Puglisi di “Nell’orto degli Ulivi” si fa gesto di apertura verso l’altro, invitando il visitatore a entrare nello spazio sacro.

Recently inaugurated in coordination with the exhibition “Andy Warhol. Pop Art & Textiles” and on view until March 2026, the exhibition “Sacro, Profano, Umano” by Lorenzo Puglisi and Andy Warhol is hosted in the Church of the Santo Sudario, a striking 16th-century church. By juxtaposing the modern icon Marilyn Monroe with Puglisi’s own version of the Mona Lisa, a Renaissance one, the exhibition becomes a fascinating dialogue between the master of Pop Art and an artist whose imagery draws deeply from biblical subjects.

Set between the two artworks, at the heart of the exhibition, Puglisi’s reinterpretation of “Nell’orto degli Ulivi” becomes a gesture of openness toward the other, inviting visitors into the sacred space.

Currently on display at our main space, Ross Bleckner « Black Dome » painting offers you a perfect example of elegance and deep meaning in an artwork.

Best explanation would be this excellent Nadja Argyropoulou’s text from 2015:

« Back in 1990, Dome is at the source of such questions, at the nexus of science, mysticism, architecture, biology, painting and raw feeling and at the core of a black square: as if a voyager aboard a spacecraft has actually jumped into one of the legendary black holes where the substance of the universe is sucked in and compressed ad infinitum and darkness is light that has not yet reached a destiny.

This substance is creation’s common denominator: the great alchemists like Hermes Trismegistus have actually commemorated the truth in « The Emerald Table »- « Whatever is below is similar to that which is above. Through this the marvels of the work of one thing are procured and perfected »; experiments have confirmed that nothing really ever dies and the fundamental particles of matter and antimatter create stars, domes, blood cells, disease, fauna and flora, skyscrapers in equal measure.

Dome is the kind of painting that reintroduces in the late twentieth century, and under developments in neurobiology, medicine, human physiology, concerns that pervaded art in the beginning of the century; concerns that survived through the century in works which combined what Baudelaire had described as an « aspiration towards the infinite » with future premonitions and tied ancient knowledge to hard social realities. There is something sad and proverbially humane in this effort to grasp light and vision, thought and feeling, joy and pain, personal identity and the universal psyche in the measure of a canvas »

Currently on view at the exhibition “Vis à Vis”, an encounter between two visions.

Lorenzo Puglisi presents his own “Narcissus” dialoguing with “Estrella” by Aldo Mondino, from his ta**us series.

Mondino’s “Estrella*”highlights his refined painting techniques and bold choice of white linoleum as a canvas — a testament to his innovation and taste.

In contrast, Puglisi’s “Narcissus”emerges from a black and void background, where only the essence of human flesh is revealed.

Attualmente in mostra all’esposizione “Vis à Vis”, un incontro tra due visioni.

Lorenzo Puglisi presenta il suo “Narcissus” in dialogo con “Estrella” di Aldo Mondino, appartenente alla serie dei tori.

“Estrella” di Mondino mette in risalto la sua raffinata tecnica pittorica e l’audace scelta del linoleum bianco come supporto — una testimonianza della sua innovazione e del suo gusto.

In contrasto, il “Narcissus” di Puglisi emerge da uno sfondo nero e vuoto, dove si rivela soltanto l’essenza della carne umana.
