È in questo contesto che, nel 1972, THE BAR II entra nella Sonnabend Collection: nove pannelli a carboncino in cui Gilbert & George si ritraggono a grandezza naturale, immersi nell’atmosfera malinconica e silenziosa di un bar.
Un’opera pensata come una grande forma di comunicazione con il pubblico e un nuovo tassello di quella sintonia artistica e personale che avrebbe legato Gilbert & George e Ileana Sonnabend per decenni.

The relationship between Ileana Sonnabend and Gilbert & George was a dialogue built over time, one work after another.
While much of the art world was turning towards abstraction, Ileana Sonnabend continued to believe in an artistic practice that placed something very different at its heart: the artists themselves, their presence, their lives.
It was in this context that, in 1972, THE BAR II entered the Sonnabend Collection: nine charcoal panels in which Gilbert & George portray themselves life-size, immersed in the melancholic and silent atmosphere of a bar.
Conceived as a powerful way of communicating with the public, the work became another chapter in the artistic and personal affinity that would connect Gilbert & George and Ileana Sonnabend for decades.
