It recounts the life of Minamoto no Yosh*tsune through dramatic illustrations and short narratives.

Among the episodes depicted are Ushiwakamaru’s sword training at Mount Kurama, his legendary meeting with Benkei at Gojō Bridge, the attack at Ichi-no-Tani, scenes from the Battle of Dan-no-Ura, the night attack on the Horikawa Palace, and the famous Ataka Barrier encounter.

More than a simple picture book, it offers a fascinating glimpse into how Yosh*tsune's legend was retold for Meiji-period readers over 130 years ago.

🇬🇧 A lone rider descends a gentle hill beneath drifting cherry blossoms, capturing a fleeting moment of spring.

The title brings together bajutsu (horsemanship) and sakuragari, a poetic expression for enjoying the blossoms, much like hanami. By extension, it may also suggest refined aristocratic pursuits—seasonal outings or even falconry (takagari)—set against landscapes admired for their beauty.

The image evokes a world where discipline and elegance meet, and where the warrior becomes part of the poetry of the season.

🇬🇧 This single sheet taken from an illustrated war tale depicts Minamoto no Yosh*tsune during his legendary “Eight-Boat Leap,” as he escapes across enemy ships while being pursued by the formidable Taira warrior Noritsune.

During the naval battles of 1185, Yosh*tsune evades capture by leaping from one vessel to another, demonstrating extraordinary agility and tactical brilliance. His retreat was not driven by fear, but by the awareness that the battle had already been won, making any further combat unnecessary and dangerously reckless.

The episode, rooted in the Heike Monogatari, became a symbol of heroic escape and is often associated with the climactic Genpei War battles, including Dan-no-ura.

🇬🇧 The triptych depicts a crucial moment in the secret vendetta plot of Ōboshi Yuranosuke.

At the centre, Ōboshi has just received a confidential letter detailing the plan to avenge his fallen lord, a plan he and his companions have long concealed, deliberately adopting a dissolute lifestyle to deceive their enemies into believing they had abandoned all thoughts of revenge.

On the right, the courtesan Okuru is shown holding a mirror, which she has used to secretly read the contents of the letter from behind. Realising that his secret has been compromised, Ōboshi resolves to redeem Okuru from the teahouse and kill her, thus eliminating the risk of betrayal.

On the left stands Teraoka, Okuru’s brother, who from the outset has sought to assist Ōboshi in the revenge plot, despite repeated and firm refusals. It is precisely Teraoka’s unwavering loyalty and persistence (mirroring his devotion to Ōboshi) that ultimately leads Ōboshi to spare Okuru’s life, once he becomes aware of their familial bond.

🇬🇧 The triptych depicts the dramatic encounter between Taira no Atsumori and Kumagai Naozane during the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani.
Fleeing toward the sea after the defeat of the Taira forces, Atsumori is pursued by Kumagai and initially turns back to fight, briefly gaining the upper hand. Eventually overpowered and thrown to the ground, Atsumori is unhelmeted, revealing himself to be a very young boy—about the same age as Kumagai’s own son. Struck by this realization, Kumagai hesitates, wishing to spare the youth’s life. However, as fellow Genji soldiers approach the scene, he understands that Atsumori would inevitably be captured and killed. Overcome by anguish, Kumagai takes the young warrior’s life himself. Tormented by remorse, he later renounces the warrior’s path and becomes a Buddhist monk.

🇬🇧 In this evocative print, Lady Suo no Naishi (an 11th-century court poet known from the Hyakunin Isshu anthology) is depicted in a moonlit forest encountering a Buddhist nun. Suo no Naishi, elegantly dressed in a Heian-era kimono, pauses amid tall trees as a gentle night breeze rustles the leaves. Across from her stands the nun, a serene figure in robes. The composition conveys a sense of spiritual reflection: the poetess’s surprise meeting with the nun symbolizes a moment of guidance or introspection, illuminated by soft moonlight filtering through the foliage.

🇬🇧 This print portrays Sanada Yukimura (a samurai general) during his secret exile at Mt. Kudo. He is depicted in a humble mountain hut, living in seclusion after his clan’s defeat at Sekigahara. The scene exudes quiet resilience: Yukimura sits in hiding, surrounded by rustic interiors, perhaps contemplating his return to battle and the honor of the Sanada clan.

The scene narrates how he entrusted a mirror to his mother (or wife) as a symbolic keepsake, while she urged him to fight with the same resolve as his father and be prepared to die honorably in battle. This passage emphasizes family loyalty, the warrior’s duty to sacrifice, and Yukimura’s ultimate destiny alongside his son at the Siege of Osaka.
