MANKIND IS CRAZY.

「この展示はポストヒューマンの進化についてのアイデアを集めたものです。」

DDFが描く「存在」は、生物的、有機的であると同時に、デジタル的で物質的でもあります。それらは人ではなく、むしろ人が最終的に行き着くかもしれない姿です。

作品は、過去に使用した作品やアイデアによる複数のレイヤーから生まれます。古い作品を新たな表面として再利用し、以前のイメージを残しながら新しい作品へと展開していく。そのレイヤリングは、DDF自身の変化や発展を可視化するものでもあります。

「この物質性によって作品は成り立っています。付け足されるたびに紙は変形し、以前のイメージは幽霊のように作品にとどまっています。ぜひ壁に展示された作品をご覧ください。」

MANKIND IS CRAZY.

“This show is a collection of ideas about post-human evolution.”

The “beings” are a mixture of bionic and organic, digital and physical in their outcome and their make-up. They aren’t people but rather where people might end up.

Each work is the result of multiple layers of previously used work and ideas. In layering and reusing old works as new surfaces, DDF considers what art making leaves behind. Layering also acts as a visualization of his own development, with previous images remaining visible in the construction of new work.

今回の展覧会は、i GALLERY OSAKAからgallery communeへ、新たな企画について相談したことをきっかけに始まりました。

アート、出版、ファッション、音楽といった異なる文化を横断しながら、独自の視点で国内外の表現を紹介してきた彼らの活動に私たちは以前から注目しており、その対話のなかで、communeからDDFの個展が提案されました。

DDFは私たちにとっても以前から関心を寄せていたアーティストであり、双方の視点が自然に重なったことから、本展の実現へとつながりました。

一度目にしたイメージは、どこまで同じイメージであり続けるのか。

引用され、重ねられ、異なる文脈へと置かれることで、その意味や記憶は絶えず変化していきます。本展では、DDFが蓄積し、更新し続けてきた視覚言語を通して、イメージを見るという行為そのものをあらためて捉えます。

The exhibition began when i GALLERY OSAKA approached gallery commune to discuss a new project.

We had long followed their distinctive approach to presenting creative practices from Japan and abroad across art, publishing, fashion and music. During our conversations, commune proposed a solo exhibition by DDF—an artist we had also been interested in for some time. The natural convergence of these perspectives led to the realization of this exhibition.

To what extent does an image remain the same after being seen?

As images are borrowed, layered and placed within different contexts, their meanings and how they are remembered evolve constantly. Through the visual language DDF has built up and continues to update, this exhibition reexamines the very act of seeing images.

i GALLERY OSAKAでは、東京・幡ヶ谷を拠点とするgallery communeとの共同企画として、ロンドンを拠点に活動するアーティスト、Daniel David Freeman（DDF）による個展「Mankind is Crazy」を開催します。

ペインティング、ドローイング、スクリーンプリント、コラージュ、グラフィック、ファッションなど、異なる領域を横断するDDFの実践。私たちがDDFに惹かれたのは、その多様性そのものではなく、それぞれを明確に区別することなく、自身を取り巻く視覚文化の一部として等価に扱う姿勢でした。

DDFの作品では、既知のイメージや断片が引用され、反復され、異なるレイヤーのなかで衝突しながら、もともとの意味や文脈から少しずつ離れていきます。

そこに現れるのは、ひとつの完成されたイメージというよりも、イメージが別のイメージと出会い、意味を変え、新たな視覚言語へと組み替えられていく過程そのものです。

i GALLERY OSAKA is pleased to present Mankind is Crazy, a solo exhibition by London-based artist Daniel David Freeman (DDF), organized in collaboration with gallery commune, Tokyo.

DDF’s work spans painting, drawing, screen printing, collage, graphic design and fashion. What drew us to DDF was not the diversity of these fields itself, but his approach to treating each as an equal part of the visual culture surrounding him.

In DDF’s work, familiar images and fragments are borrowed, repeated and brought into collision across different layers, gradually drifting away from their original meanings and contexts.

What emerges is less a single finished image than a process in which one image encounters another, changes meaning, and is reorganized into a new visual language.
