2000년 《미디어_시티 서울》이라는 이름으로 시작했던 서울미디어시티비엔날레는 지난 20여 년간 도시 서울과 미디어 환경의 변화 속에서 미술의 동시대성과 실험성을 주목하며 오늘날까지 이어지고 있습니다. 본 비엔날레는 1996년부터 세 번 개최되었던 《도시와 영상》전에서 서울과 미디어 관련 사유의 경험을 나누기 시작했고, 이후 2년마다 열리는 비엔날레 형식으로 시대와 공명하는 다양한 생각과 활동을 담아왔습니다. Since its inauguration in 2000 as an initiative of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Seoul Mediacity Biennale has earned international recognition for its experimental

engagement with contemporaneity and the changes of media in the city. The Biennale has shared conceptual experiences on media from its precursor exhibition Seoul in Media, which was held three times between 1996 and 1999. Since then, the Biennale has presented eleven editions, each embodying varying ideas and activities that resonate with its respective time.

The 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale, 𝘚é𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦: 𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵, concluded its 90-day run across four venues—Seoul Museum of Art, NAKWON SANGGA, Cinematheque Seoul Art Cinema, and Seoul Artists' Platform_New&Young— approximately marking 140,000 visitors. The Seoul Mediacity Biennale will now take time to regroup and prepare before returning with its 14th edition. We sincerely thank all who supported and engaged with the exhibition.

제13회 서울미디어시티비엔날레 《강령降靈: 영혼의 기술》이 서울시립미술관 서소문본관, 낙원상가, 시네마테크 서울아트시네마, 청년예술청 총 4곳에서 90일간의 대장정을 마무리하며 누적 14만 관객을 기록했습니다. 서울미디어시티비엔날레는 재정비의 시간을 갖고 14회 비엔날레로 돌아오겠습니다. 보내주신 성원에 진심으로 감사드립니다.

A video documentation of 𝘚é𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦: 𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, by scholar of comparative literature and media, Elena Vogman is now released. By tracing the interplay between its clinical theory and experimental media practices, the lecture proposes an expanded understanding of séance as a transformative practice at the intersection of psychoanalysis and cinema—ranging from patient-run ciné-clubs to the influence on avant-garde filmmakers such as Jean Rouch and Mario Ruspoli. A video documentation of Angels and Demons. Tuning and World Building by Daniel Muzyczuk is now released. As a director of Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź., Daniel Muzyczuk explores the vibrational worldview from Pythagoras’s music of the spheres, through Meredith Young-Sowers’s New Age chakra-tuning and Anton Webern (1883-1945)’s spiritually inflected twelve-tone practice, to Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016)’s Deep Listening and Mei-mei Berssenbrugge’s cosmic poetics. Lecture 𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘢 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘰𝘯, 𝘈𝘯 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥

A video documentation of 𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘢 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘰𝘯, 𝘈𝘯 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥, lecture by Lorraine Lee Tet which took its place in August 27. As President of the Victorian Spiritualists’ Union, Melbourne, which houses much of Georgiana Houghton(1814-1884)’s work, Lorraine Lee Tet expanded upon the development of Houghton’s mediumship and her unique relationship with the spirit world that enabled her to produce the paintings on display. This richly illustrated publication documents, contextualizes and expands upon the 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale, Séance: Technology of the Spirit. Curated by Anton Vidokle, Hallie Ayres, and Lukas Brasiskis, explores the entanglement of art and spiritual practice from the dawn of modernity to the present, connecting the mystics and mediums who prefigured the emergence of modern and abstract art to contemporary artists from around the world. Across 650 pages, this bilingual English-Korean publication presents a map of that complex historical relationship. Eleven newly commissioned texts reflect on the influence of marginalized belief systems on the development of modern and contemporary art, collectively proposing an alternative to the prevailing formalist, social, or materialist accounts.

Corita Kent

The Immaculate Heart of Mary, the congregation of nuns that Corita Kent (1918–1986) joined at the age of eighteen, is a “teaching order.” So Sister Mary Corita used her gift as an artist to express her spiritual commitments and fulfill her responsibility to educate. These serigraphs are typical of the increasingly political work she made during the turbulent 1960s, which often asked her audiences to reflect on the causes of violence and division.

코리타 켄트(1918-1986)가 열여덟 살에 입회한 성모성심수녀회는 교육을 사명으로 삼는 수녀회였습니다. 이에 따라 코리타 수녀는 자신의 예술적 재능을 통해 신앙적 헌신을 표현하는 동시에 교육자로서의 소명을 다하고자 했습니다. 이번 전시의 세리그래프 작품들은 특히 1960년대의 격동기 속에서 작가의 정치적 관점을 더욱 분명히 드러내며, 관객으로 하여금 폭력과 분열의 원인을 돌아보도록 촉구합니다.
