The Mdina Dungeons Museum located just inside, and beside, the main gate (on the extreme right) as one enters Mdina, is Malta’s equivalent to the highly popular and successful ‘London Dungeo
n’. Sited in real medieval dungeons beneath the natural History Museum in Vilhena Palace, they contain a number of characters, personalities, (famous and infamous) and episodes from the dark part of the island’s history. All these are set in a series of fully restored underground vaults, passage ways and chambers, and make the Mdina Dungeons Museum Malta’s first and only ‘Dark Walk’ attraction. From the Roman to the Arabs, the Knights and even Napoleon, the startling realism of their stories is portrayed in the authentic atmosphere of real medieval dungeon chambers. Whilst wandering at one’s pace, the casual visitor will discover Drama, Mystery and sometimes Horror from Malta and Gozo’s forgotten past. Descriptive text tablets in Maltese, English, Italian, French, German and Spanish explain the background to the exhibits and a multitude of gripping sounds completes the total experience. The venue is completely safe to tour and at present opening hours are Monday to Sunday from
10.00a.m. to 4:00p.m. However, special arrangements for groups to visit the Dungeons after closing hours can be made by prior appointment. This facility is ideal for night excursions to the Mdina/Rabat area. Summer time from 4.30pm to 7.00pm from June till end of August.
