Some drawings whisper. This one shouts.

There’s nothing tentative here. Just a face, caught in the act of rising—or resisting. Drawn with fierce certainty and explosive line, this sketch by David Alfaro Siqueiros delivers a visceral punch. It carries the unmistakable charge of a study for something larger: a mural, a monument, a revolution-in-progress.

Siqueiros, a master of scale and drama, rarely did anything quietly. Even his sketches are declarations. This one, rendered in fast, slashing graphite, feels like a frozen gesture: mouth set, jaw locked, eyes turned upward—in hope, defiance, or both.

The drawing crackles with energy. You can almost hear the scratch of the pencil, the urgency of its making. But it’s not just a technical feat. It’s psychological. The exaggerated upward gaze, the tilted chin, the monumental perspective—they create a feeling of aspiration, of struggle, of someone looking past their present.

There’s no need to pin it down to a specific mural or date. It stands on its own, full of intensity and character. It reminds us that sometimes, a single line can carry the weight of a whole movement.

Trained under Spanish Civil War exiles, Juan Carlos del Valle’s work draws on the lush, tactile legacy of the Spanish School—thick impastos, luminous surfaces, and an almost sculptural sense of form. His practice is rooted in painterly rigor and a devotion to the medium that feels both classical and defiantly contemporary.

In this new series, he pushes the medium further: each canvas is a sensuous, weighty object—and a subtle commentary. These paintings reflect on what we value (and what we’ve forgotten to). Del Valle has earned deep institutional respect, with numerous museum exhibitions and publications to his name.

A rare combination of painterly force and thoughtful intent!

Felicidades, Magali 💕

🖼️ Apparently, last Monday was International Art Historian’s Day — and, as luck would have it, I happen to be one.

Here’s a rare photo of me doing what I do best: pondering life, beauty, and the ineffable mysteries of art (or maybe just trying to remember where I put my keys — who’s to say?).

Being an art historian isn’t always glamorous — it’s quite misunderstood and does not involve lounging in front of masterpieces as much (tragically). More often, it’s just me, a computer and a stack of books.

But it is endlessly rewarding, forever stimulating, often thrilling and at the heart of it, a love letter to humanity’s creativity across time.

Of all the things I’ve doubted in life, my passion for art has never wavered. It’s been my compass, my curiosity, and my chosen way of engaging with the world.

So here’s to the weird, wonderful job of reading life through art. Here’s to the thinkers, the researchers, the catalogue-makers, the underliners, the footnote fanatics, the beauty-chasers. 🥂

Pedro Galarza Durán may not be a household name, but his paintings — with thick brushstrokes and soft light — hold a quiet power that speaks to the essence of a forgotten Mexico.

There’s a particular thrill in rediscovering artists like him: those whose work has shaped the visual landscape but remain tucked away in the corners of art history. It’s a joy to unearth their stories and share their brilliance.

This carousel is a small tribute to the creamy impastos and golden light that bring his work to life.✨
