Thank you to everyone who visited the Olivia Foundation this year.

Our exhibitions Woman in a Rowboat and Sabine Moritz: Ara (curated by Diana Nawi), along with Mika Rottenberg’s Lampshare installation, were received with so much enthusiasm. We’re grateful to everyone who visited us from around the world.

Nicole Eisenman’s Head with Demon (2018) greets visitors to the Olivia Foundation rooftop. Cast in bronze as a functioning water fountain, its dense form feels at once monumental and unsettling—part figure, part mutation. True to Eisenman’s practice, it resists easy reading: the longer you look, the more it shifts, revealing humor, unease, and an odd tenderness. This work reflects a period where Eisenman fused sculpture with private psychological terrain, creating pieces that inhabit space with both weight and wit.

Head with Demon (2018) de Nicole Eisenman se alza en la azotea de la Fundación Olivia. Fundida en bronce y concebida como fuente, su forma densa es monumental y a la vez inquieta—parte figura, parte mutación. Fiel a la práctica de Eisenman, rehúye lecturas fáciles: cuanto más se observa, más se transforma, revelando humor, incomodidad y una extraña ternura. Esta obra refleja un periodo en el que Eisenman fusionó la escultura con un paisaje psicológico íntimo, creando piezas que habitan el espacio con peso y agudeza.

Lampshare (Mexico Rottenbar), 2025 by Mika Rottenberg was a commissioned bar designed especially for the greenhouse-like top floor of the Olivia Foundation. The forms of these installations are playful and organic, mimicking the natural growth of trees or resembling a large-scale bouquet of wooden branches covered in brightly colored, sometimes light-up, mushrooms. Planted among these forms are tabletops. Both these surfaces and the mushrooms are made from plastic that the artist has reclaimed as a primary sculptural and building material.

Lampshare (Mexico Rottenbar), 2025 por Mika Rottenberg fue comisionado especialmente para el último piso tipo invernadero de la Olivia Foundation. Las formas de estas instalaciones son lúdicas y orgánicas, evocando el crecimiento natural de los árboles o bien un gran ramo de ramas de madera cubiertas de hongos de colores brillantes, algunos incluso iluminados. Entre estas estructuras se integran superficies que funcionan como mesas. Tanto estas superficies como los hongos están hechos de plástico, que la artista ha reutilizado como material principal de construcción y escultura. Este material, y el proceso mediante el cual lo reimagina, lo transforma y lo reconfigura, están en el centro de este proyecto.

“Heimliche Liebe / Heimlich Liebe / Couple im Gespräch” (2023) by Maria Lassnig explores intimacy through distortion and abstraction. Known for her “body awareness” paintings, Lassnig often portrayed figures as felt from within rather than seen from without. Here, two forms tilt toward each other in a quiet, ambiguous exchange.

Reconocida por sus pinturas de “conciencia corporal”, Lassnig solía representar las figuras tal como se sentían desde dentro, más que como se veían desde fuera. Aquí, dos formas se inclinan una hacia la otra en un intercambio silencioso y ambiguo.

Dezòd (2023–24) by is featured in our current exhibition Woman in a Rowboat, curated by .

Tomm El-Saieh’s paintings operate between rhythm and rupture. Drawing from Haitian visual traditions, modernist abstraction, and personal memory, his works are dense with layered marks that pulse like coded language. Dezòd—Creole for “disorder”—evokes both chaos and structure. Up close, you see how much labor is embedded in the surface: thousands of singular gestures, marks and shifts in color. The painting feels improvised yet precise, intuitive yet systematic—each moment part of a wider, vibrating field that resists easy resolution.

Dezòd (2023–24) de Tomm El-Saieh. Las pinturas de Tomm El-Saieh se mueven entre el ritmo y la ruptura. Inspirado por tradiciones visuales haitianas, la abstracción modernista y la memoria personal, su obra está cargada de capas de marcas que vibran como si fueran un lenguaje cifrado. Dezòd—palabra criolla para “desorden”—sugiere tanto caos como estructura. De cerca, se percibe el trabajo invertido en la superficie: miles de gestos individuales, borraduras y líneas fantasmales. La pintura parece improvisada pero precisa, intuitiva pero sistemática—cada trazo forma parte de un campo más amplio que vibra y evita una resolución sencilla.

Joan Semmel (b. 1932) is an American painter who has used her own body for over five decades to challenge how women are depicted in art. Her work rejects the male gaze, reclaims female subjectivity, and portrays aging with radical honesty. Two of her paintings—Hide and Seek (2023) and Cross-Over (1979)—are included in the exhibition Woman in a Rowboat, curated by Diana Nawi (on view through Sept 28).

“When I began to work with representations of the figure, there were not yet the formulations of the critical discourse such as ‘the male gaze’, but I was, of course, addressing precisely that cultural phenomenon by insisting on and prioritising my own point of view… By using my own body without adjusting its imperfections to idealise or aestheticise it, I tried to undercut those distortions.” – Joan Semmel, Studio International, 2014

“Untitled” (2014) by Etel Adnan shows the same sensitivity found in her poetry. While best known as a writer, Adnan also created small abstract paintings like this one—quiet, concentrated, and full of feeling. The work suggests a landscape, with soft, layered colors arranged in a way that feels intuitive and poetic.

“Untitled” (2014) de Etel Adnan muestra la misma sensibilidad que caracteriza a su poesía. Aunque es más conocida como escritora, Adnan también realizó pequeñas pinturas abstractas como esta: silenciosas, concentradas y llenas de emoción. La obra sugiere un paisaje, con colores suaves y superpuestos dispuestos de manera intuitiva y poética.
