The three hardest castles to conquer in Westeros aren’t necessarily the biggest armies. They’re the ones designed so you can barely attack them in the first place.
1. Greywater Watch (House Reed)
This might be the single hardest stronghold in all of Westeros because you can’t even find it.
Greywater Watch is built deep within the swamps of the Neck, and according to the lore, it moves as the water levels change. An invading army can’t besiege a castle it can’t locate. Its greatest defense is that it’s simply disappearing.
2. The Eyrie (House Arryn)
A fortress literally in the sky.
Long before you reach the gates, the mountain is already trying to kill you. As Catelyn Stark discovered, the journey involves narrow goat paths, mules, and treacherous climbs before ending at a sheer cliff hundreds of feet above the valley. By the time attackers arrive, they’ve already fought the mountain itself.
3. Storm’s End (House Baratheon)
Storm’s End doesn’t rely on hidden paths or impossible geography. It simply dares you to climb it.
Its massive curtain walls are smooth, impossibly high, and built without footholds or handholds. Scaling them is virtually impossible, which is why Storm’s End has endured siege after siege throughout history.
Which castle would you least want to attack?
Personally, I’d choose Greywater Watch. You can’t conquer a castle if you spend the entire campaign trying to figure out where it is.
