Beneath the elegance of Victorian fashion was a highly organized system of layered garments, each designed with a specific purpose, beyond just covering up or the era’s notions of modesty.
For example, the chemise, worn closest to the skin, acted as a protective barrier, absorbing sweat and preventing the corset from irritating the body, while petticoats added insulation and volume.Even garments like pantalettes and stockings served practical roles.
Yet despite their functional design, these layers were undeniably restrictive. Movement was limited, comfort was often secondary, and the ideal silhouette they created reflected rigid expectations placed on women’s bodies and behavior.
This cutaway offers a more detailed look at the many layers worn at the time, highlighting not just the style, but what daily life was like.
