P**s Christ (1987), Andres Serrano

In 1987, Serrano created P**s Christ, an amber-tinged photograph of a plastic crucifix submerged in a glass container of the artist's own urine. Visually, the photograph is undeniably beautiful. It glows with a warm, classical luminescence that echoes the golden hues of Renaissance religious paintings. Thematically, however, the work ignited a firestorm of controversy.

Serrano maintained that the piece was not an act of blasphemy, but rather a critique of the cheapening of Christian icons in contemporary society, as well as a reflection on the very real, physical suffering of the crucifixion. The academic community frequently views the photograph as a modern taboo icon, crossing symbolic boundaries to challenge society's compartmentalisation of the sacred and the abject.

Magic of Sunrise (2022) Ferdinando Ambrosino

Ferdinando Ambrosino is a painter and sculptor from Naples, Italy. Watchmen (Fate Card) (2025) Alexander Lufer

« It is very likely that the digital revolution taking place before our eyes will radically change art. And if I'm lucky, I can reflect these changes in my paintings. Alexander Lufer is a painter based in Germany whose work has been featured in solo and group shows internationally. With a background in architecture, Lufer developed his artistic practice inspired by the great masters of the past and notable contemporary authors. He explores themes of the tension between tradition and modernity through figurative compositions, altered landscapes, and unexpected still lifes.

The Rock (2026) Mr. Strange

Jean-Marie Gitard (aka Mr. Strange), a painter and digital artist, draws inspiration from the surrealism of Dali, Magritte, and Hooper. Using photomanipulation and digital collage techniques, with occasional use of oil paint, he creates enigmatic works imbued with absurdity. His pieces, blending poetry and sharp critique, evoke surprise, curiosity, and reflection by straddling the line between the real world and the imaginary.

Balkan Baroque, Venice Biennale (1997) Marina Abramović

Marina Abramović, a Serbian-American artist, boldly claimed her own body as her primary medium. Often referring to herself as the "grandmother of performance art", Abramović has spent over five decades redefining the boundaries of physical endurance, psychological resilience, and audience interaction.

At the 1997 Venice Biennale, she performed Balkan Baroque, a visceral response to the devastating conflicts in the former Yugoslavia. Sitting atop a pile of 1,500 bloody cow bones in a sweltering basement, she spent four days scrubbing the bones clean while singing traditional folk songs and projecting images of her family. The impossible task of washing away the blood served as a poignant metaphor for the indelible stain of war. This powerful piece earned her the Golden Lion for Best Artist, cementing her status in the upper echelons of the global art market.

Olajide Kuti is a visual artist based in Lagos, Nigeria, whose work explores the emotional and psychological dimensions of human existence. The wait (2025) Oliver Staeuber

The Chilean/Swiss artist Oliver Staeuber (1980) is currently based in Bern, Switzerland. Began his approach to the visual arts while studying architecture back in 1999. Ten years later, he moved from Chile to Switzerland, where he developed his career as an architect and his work as an artist. Staeuber’s work focuses on the representation of natural landscapes, animals, and traditional rituals to explore the strained relationship between humans and nature, humanity's direct impact, and how a character fights back.

Skadi Engeln's parents’ scientific backgrounds and Catholic upbringing fostered an environment of inquisitive discussions about fundamental questions concerning life, the universe, and humanity. This exposure to the world's intricate enigma has been a major influence on Engeln’s artistic expression. During her studies between 1990 and 1995, she explored the expressive capacities of colour and form, investigating their interplay in various combinations. Rather than unveiling hidden secrets, Engeln sought to preserve the enigma that is often associated with beauty.
