Ivan Tristan Mallari II: Shaping Art, Inspiring Lives Through Charcoal

In Sta. Ana, Pampanga, a young artist is steadily making his mark, not just through his art, but through the lives he touches along the way. Ivan Tristan Mallari II is an artist, a mentor, a learner, and a passionate advocate for creative growth. Currently pursuing a degree in architecture at Don Honorio Ventura State University, Ivan seamlessly bridges the worlds of structure and expression, discipline and imagination.
Ivan’s journey into art began in an unexpected yet relatable way, through inspiration from his Grade 9 classmates. What started as curiosity soon evolved into exploration, as he experimented with different mediums in search of his artistic voice. It was in charcoal, however, that he found a deeper connection. The rawness, depth, and emotion that charcoal allows became his language. Through countless hours of practice, he honed his skills in portraiture, capturing not just faces, but stories and emotions etched in every stroke.

A significant influence in Ivan’s artistic development is his mentor, Erwin V. Dayrit, a respected ballpoint artist. Under his guidance, Ivan refined his technique and cultivated a stronger sense of identity in his work. This mentorship not only shaped his artistry but also inspired him to give back, something Ivan now considers one of his most meaningful achievements.
Beyond his personal growth, Ivan has taken on the role of a mentor to aspiring artists. His dedication to teaching charcoal portraiture has empowered many of his students to discover and nurture their own talents. Today, several of them are becoming skilled artists in their own right showing Ivan’s patience, generosity, and genuine passion for sharing knowledge. Through workshops and training sessions, he continues to create spaces where creativity is encouraged and cultivated.

Ivan Tristan Mallari II’s story reminds that talent becomes more powerful when it is shared. As he continues to pursue architecture while deepening his roots in the art community, he embodies the spirit of a true artist, one who not only creates, but uplifts others along the way. In every portrait he draws and every student he mentors, Ivan leaves behind a legacy of inspiration, proving that art is not just about expression, it is about connection, growth, and impact.

Christopher Adriano Santiago: The Denim Art Master Redefining Art Beyond Canvas

Christopher Adriano Santiago, a 48-year-old self-taught artist from Upper Bigte, Norzagaray, Bulacan, proves that passion can shape talent into something extraordinary. A former student of Associate in Architectural Drafting, Christopher began his creative journey in 2009, guided not by formal training but by curiosity, discipline, and a deep love for creative expression. Over the years, he has carved out a unique identity in the art scene using denim jeans as his primary medium, transforming everyday material into compelling visual narratives.

His works often revolve around old cars, capturing their timeless beauty and character. Through denim’s rugged texture and layered tones, Christopher brings these subjects to life, blending nostalgia with innovation.

Behind his artistry is a powerful source of inspiration: his family. They fuel his creativity and remind him of his purpose, especially during challenging moments. Like many artists, Christopher admits that one of his biggest struggles is overcoming creative fatigue, those days when motivation is hard to summon and ideas feel distant. Yet, it is his resilience and love for the craft that keep him going.

His dedication has earned him recognition in the Philippine art scene. He became a finalist in the GSIS National Art Competition in both 2011 and 2013 under the non-representational category, and more recently, he received the Investor’s Choice Award at the Philippine Art Festival 2024, an achievement that highlights both his growth and the impact of his distinctive style.

Christopher’s message to aspiring artists is simple yet powerful: “Just keep painting. Paint what you like. There are no rules in art. Your art, your rules.”

In a world that often seeks perfection, Christopher Adriano Santiago reminds us that authenticity, persistence, and passion are what truly make an artist stand out.

Brushstrokes of Serenity: The Art of Joel Castroverde Janer

From the crowded streets of Metro Manila to the peaceful beauty of rural landscapes, Joel Castroverde Janer paints the world he longs to see.

Growing up in Metro Manila, Joel Castroverde Janer was surrounded by traffic, pollution, and the shadowy alleys of a restless city. But deep in his heart, he imagined a different world, one filled with clear skies, fresh air, and quiet fields untouched by concrete and steel. Through his art, Joel transforms that vision into reality.

His journey on arts began at a parish art workshop in the Industrial Valley Complex in Marikina, where he first discovered his passion for painting. Encouraged by Fr. Uldarico Dioquino and guided by mentors Andy Urag and Pol Mesina, Joel slowly honed his craft and developed the style that would define his work.
Today, Joel is known for blending impressionism and realism, creating captivating artworks that feel both dreamlike and vividly real. One of his most remarkable creations is his Banig Series, paintings that portray impressionistic rural scenes on woven anahaw mats. The illusion is so convincing that when the works were posted online, some collectors hesitated to buy them, believing the paintings were literally done on anahaw mats instead of canvas.

Beyond being a passionate artist, Joel is also a devoted husband and loving father. He continues to inspire fellow artists through his involvement in Let’s Paint, an online mentoring community, and Imprimatura, a collective of plein air painters who celebrate painting directly from nature.

Through his paintings, Joel Castroverde Janer invites us to pause and appreciate a world of calm, beauty, and nature, something often forgotten in the busy life of the city.

John Vincent Labasbas: A Samareño Artist Capturing Life Through Realism

John Vincent Labasbas, a self-taught artist from Calbayog City, Samar, is steadily gaining attention for his exceptional skills in oil painting. What began as a childhood interest in drawing gradually developed into a serious pursuit of art during his college years. Without formal training or apprenticeship, John relied on his own determination to improve, studying the works of master artists and learning through constant practice. Over time, he developed a realistic style that allows him to transform simple subjects into striking works of art.

John is best known for his portraits, where the emotion of his subjects is often revealed through their eyes and subtle expressions. His paintings carry a quiet intensity, drawing viewers into the mood and story behind each face. Alongside portraiture, he also paints scenes of everyday life, particularly livelihoods and moments that reflect the environment and experiences he grew up with in Samar. These scenes are not dramatic or staged; they are honest glimpses of real life that many people recognize and relate to.

For John Vincent, painting is both technique and telling stories that come from lived experience. His works reflect the people, places, and realities that shaped him as an artist. As he continues to refine his craft, he hopes to become a recognized name in the art community while staying true to the stories that inspire his work. Through patience, passion, and authenticity, John Vincent Labasbas continues to prove that meaningful art can grow from humble beginnings.

Levy Ananias F. Moncera: Distinguished Artist from Dumalag, Capiz

At 65, Levy Ananias F. Moncera continues to captivate audiences with artworks that are both technically masterful and deeply moving. Hailing from Dumalag, Capiz, Levy has built a body of work that invites viewers into scenes of faith, community, and everyday Filipino life, from bustling public markets and humble roadside vendors to quiet moments by the river and solemn religious devotion. Each piece resonates with sincerity, drawing the eye not only to its intricate details but also to the deeper emotions and reflections embedded within.

Levy’s passion for art began in childhood and was nurtured through years of dedicated study. He took up Architectural Drafting at Capiz Regional Vocational High School, a discipline that sharpened his sense of structure, proportion, and perspective. He later earned his Fine Arts degree from the University of Santo Tomas (UST), one of the country’s most respected institutions. This strong educational foundation is evident in the precision of his compositions. The careful rendering of crowded streets, the texture of fruits and flowers, the interplay of light in sacred spaces, all executed with remarkable realism.

Beyond technique, however, it is faith and family that truly shape Levy’s artistry. Deeply inspired by his belief in God and strengthened by the support of his loved ones, his paintings reflect both spiritual depth and gratitude for life’s simple blessings. Whether portraying Christ at the altar or vendors under colorful umbrellas, Levy captures not just images but the soul of Filipino experience.

The Everyday Philippines Through Kim Canonigo’s Eyes

“What If I Try?” — How a Pandemic Sparked Iris Bonita Francisco’s Rise from Beginner to Inspiration

“I truly believe that practice makes progress. There is still a long way to go, but I’ve already come so far. Just keep going.” — Iris Bonita Francisco

It all started with a simple thought, “What if I try?” From that small moment of curiosity, Iris Bonita Francisco slowly grew into someone who now inspires many through her art. At 20 years old, Iris is a third-year BSEd-Filipino student at Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA), Pasacao. Hailing from Pamplona, Camarines Sur, she never imagined that a random scroll through Facebook during the pandemic in 2020 would awaken a passion that would eventually shape her identity. She was only 15 when she found herself captivated by the artworks appearing on her screen. Inspired and intrigued, she asked herself a simple yet life-changing question: “What if I try it too?” That moment marked the quiet beginning of a journey.

With limited resources but limitless drive, Iris began practicing daily. She immersed herself in online communities, joining Facebook groups and group chats of fellow artists, where she absorbed valuable advice from more experienced artists. Tutorials from YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok became her virtual classrooms. Through patient repetition and relentless effort, she gradually witnessed her own transformation. Lines became more confident. Shadows became more realistic. Details became more intentional. Improvement, once distant, became visible. Art, for Iris, evolved beyond passion; it became purpose and opportunity.

As her skills developed, so did her confidence. She began accepting portrait commissions, turning her talent into a source of income. In December 2023, she launched a budget-friendly custom eye drawing keychain, an innovative and heartfelt business idea. The concept not only gained support but also inspired others to explore similar creative ventures, proving that art can spark both livelihoods and community inspiration. Her talent soon reached larger audiences. In 2022, her artwork titled “The Bible” was featured on ABS-CBN’s Bayan Mo, I-Patrol Mo, marking one of her biggest milestones. This recognition was followed by a feature of her realistic artworks in the Manila Bulletin. Beyond media recognition, Iris also experienced deeply personal achievements, being able to send her fan art to personalities such as Rabin Angeles, Miss Deliciousness, and Ma’am Aeriel Jan Tolentino.

Yet despite these accomplishments, humility remains at the heart of her story. Today, some people call her their “idol,” a word she once never imagined associated with her name. From someone who started with pure curiosity, Iris has become a source of encouragement for aspiring artists who see their own beginnings reflected in her journey. Looking ahead, she dreams of greater milestones: to be more recognized as a visual artist, to participate in or hold her own art exhibit, and most importantly, to continue inspiring others.

To beginners, her advice is grounded and sincere: Start, even if you feel unready. Practice consistently, even if it’s just simple sketches every day. Learn from others, but develop your own style. And above all, never compare your starting point to someone else’s progress. Growth, she believes, is personal. Iris Bonita Francisco’s story shows that artistry is not born overnight. It is shaped in quiet rooms, late-night practices, countless erasures, and small, courageous decisions to try. In a world that often celebrates instant success, her journey highlights something more powerful: steady, patient progress.

Malayo pa, pero malayo na! And as Iris continues to draw her dreams into reality, one thing is certain: this is only the beginning of a masterpiece still in the making.

Nature Immortalized in Paint: The Art of Jhon Paul R. Alivio of Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur

“I paint nature because I want people to remember how beautiful it is, and why it deserves to be protected.” — Jhon Paul Alivio

For Jhon Paul Alivio, painting is a remembrance and a responsibility. Each landscape he creates is an act of remembering the mountains that shaped his childhood horizons, the golden fields that reflect the rhythms of rural life, and the quiet coastlines that carry stories of his homeland. Through his art, he preserves fleeting moments of light, season, and atmosphere, ensuring that the natural beauty of Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur remains alive on canvas even as time moves forward.

Born and raised in Aurora, Jhon Paul is a 28-year-old full-time visual artist who has devoted years to refining his craft. Entirely self-taught, he learned painting through discipline, persistence, and passion for growth. Without formal art education, he relied on books, social media platforms, and countless hours of practice. Trial and error became his classroom, and every struggle strengthened both his technique and determination.

He primarily paints landscapes that capture the simplicity and authenticity of countryside life. Coastal regions, rolling hills, rugged mountains, golden rice fields, and deep valleys frequently appear in his works, each rendered with care and precision. His art is representational, conveying factual narratives in a formal manner. Drawing influence from historical art movements such as Realism and Impressionism, he balances meticulous detail with atmospheric depth, allowing viewers to not only see the scene but to feel immersed within it.

Known for his detail-oriented approach, Jhon Paul faithfully captures the textures, light, and natural qualities of the land he portrays. His paintings reflect both accuracy and emotion, transforming ordinary scenery into meaningful visual experiences. Through his art, the countryside becomes immortal, untouched by time, preserved in color and form.

Beyond aesthetics, Jhon Paul’s work carries a clear advocacy. Each canvas serves as a quiet yet powerful reminder of the importance of environmental preservation. His paintings urge viewers to appreciate the landscapes around them and to recognize their responsibility in protecting them. In every mountain ridge and sunlit field he paints, there is a message: nature is both gift and legacy.

Today, some of his artworks are displayed in collectors’ homes, admired for their distinctive style and authenticity. As he continues his artistic journey, Jhon Paul Alivio wants to show that passion, and love for one’s homeland can transform the beauty of nature into enduring works of art.
