International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust
Never forget, the Holocaust did not start with gas chambers. "People around us refused to listen; and even those who listened refused to believe; and even those who believed could not comprehend."
Perpetration of atrocities, incitement to hatred and rising intolerance, alongside the silence and indifference of bystanders fuel fear and abuse, and legitimize impunity. These are risks of all times.
"If someone had … Ver mais

The Chair of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), Dani Dayan, the IHRA Secretary General, Michaela Küchler, Advisor to the IHRA, Robert Williams, and the IHRA Troika (Israel, Argentina, and the United Kingdom) state:

"We are deeply shocked by the shooting that took place during a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach in Australia, in which more than ten people have been killed and many have been injured.

We extend our condolences to the families of those killed and express our solidarity with Australia’s Jewish community.

This week, delegates from IHRA’s 35 Member Countries, eight Observer Countries, and ten Permanent International Partner organizations are coming together to reflect on the Holocaust and its contemporary consequences, with the aim of creating a more just future. That work is inseparable from the responsibility to confront antisemitism and violence against Jews today.

Democracy is built on the idea that everyone’s rights are equal. A world in which the Jewish community is not safe is a world in which no one is safe.

We call on governments and institutions to take concrete action to protect Jewish communities and ensure that they can celebrate religious and cultural life without fear. The IHRA and its Member Countries remain committed to countering antisemitism, together, wherever it appears."

Mazal tov to Charlotte Knobloch, WJC's Commissioner for Holocaust Memory, who turns 93 years old today. From the WJC we wish her Ad 120.

A Holocaust survivor, Dr. Knobloch headed the Munich Jewish community from 1985 and also served as the president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany from 2006-2010. It was the first time a woman was elected to lead the organization. She dedicated her efforts to the revival of Jewish life in Germany. Among her major achievements was the opening in 2006-2007 of Munich’s main new Ohel Jakob synagogue, the community center, as well as the Jewish museum. In 2008, Dr. Knobloch was awarded the Grand Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Despite the rising tide of antisemitism in Europe, and the threats the community faces, Dr. Knobloch is optimistic: “I have great faith in young people, and I mean both Jewish and non-Jewish. I think they will take on the responsibility, and that is ultimately all that matters.”

How does Holocaust distortion damage democracy? Here's how:

Like other forms of disinformation, Holocaust distortion creates a world where facts become debatable.

When citizens cannot agree on facts, trust in public institutions starts to break down.

When trust is eroded, societies can become polarized.

And in these polarized societies, it is easier for hate to grow.

Our best tribute to the victims and survivors of the Holocaust is to work together to create a world where we .
