The Chair of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), Dani Dayan, the IHRA Secretary General, Michaela Küchler, Advisor to the IHRA, Robert Williams, and the IHRA Troika (Israel, Argentina, and the United Kingdom) state:
"We are deeply shocked by the shooting that took place during a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach in Australia, in which more than ten people have been killed and many have been injured.
We extend our condolences to the families of those killed and express our solidarity with Australia’s Jewish community.
This week, delegates from IHRA’s 35 Member Countries, eight Observer Countries, and ten Permanent International Partner organizations are coming together to reflect on the Holocaust and its contemporary consequences, with the aim of creating a more just future. That work is inseparable from the responsibility to confront antisemitism and violence against Jews today.
Democracy is built on the idea that everyone’s rights are equal. A world in which the Jewish community is not safe is a world in which no one is safe.
We call on governments and institutions to take concrete action to protect Jewish communities and ensure that they can celebrate religious and cultural life without fear. The IHRA and its Member Countries remain committed to countering antisemitism, together, wherever it appears."
