Another historical landmark that was established in 1862 and initially served as Town Hall with a theatre during the colonial era in Singapore, the Victoria Theatre & Victoria Concert Hall is located at the heart of the City’s Civic district containing a 614-seat Theatre and a 673-seat Concert Hall.

In 1901, the memorial hall was built as an extension to the original structure to commemorate the passing of the late Queen Victoria who died earlier in that year. The clock tower was erected to connect the two structures and on 14 Feb 1992, it was gazetted as a national monument.

After a 4-year refurbishment, it re-opened in 2014 restored into its original neo-classical structure from 1905. Having played a big part of the country’s history for over 150 years, the Victoria Theatre & Victoria Concert Hall continues to be an exciting platform, supporting the growth and development of Singapore’s arts industry.

Today, it is the home to Singapore Symphonic Orchestra and many stunning international performances in the world of music and arts.

Originally planned to house the courthouse, but then served as the government offices until the late 1980s instead. Subsequent restorations and extensions have stayed faithful to the original Neoclassical Palladian architectural look of the building. It was gazetted as a National Monument on 14 Feb 1992 and now known as The Asian Civilisations Museum.

Built as a fort to defend the settlement from naval attacks, the front port of Fullerton stood strong in 1829. It was then expanded along the years and the Fullerton Building was officially opened in June 27, 1928 and was named after the first Governor of the Straits Settlement, Robert Fullerton.

The building served many purposes from then on. The most notable was serving as the General Post Office of Singapore. In 1950s, The Fullerton Building was recognised as the unofficial public monument. It stood out as the most prominent feature of the waterfront. On its rooftop stood the lighthouse, whose beacon guided all ships approaching the harbour.

The Fullerton has weathered the test of time and today, it is still shining bright across the city’s skyline and remains a symbol of Singapore. Truly, a sight to behold.

Nestled in the bustling downtown core of Singapore, today’s Capitol Singapore has its deeply rooted neo-classical beginnings.

The Capitol Building was completed in 1933, four years after the Capitol Theatre - the adjoining theatre that dominated the island’s movie scene for decades after opening as a premier cinema in the country. The Capitol Building’s striking facade fronting the road junction became the face of Capitol Theatre where giant billboards and posters of the latest movie screenings were hung to attract the crowd. It would often be mistaken for the Capitol Theatre itself due to it becoming one of the most recognisable street corners in Singapore.

Today, this historical landmark from the 1930s, is now a part of an integrated complex that houses a range of retail, lifestyle and award-winning food establishments which includes the ultra-luxurious Capitol Kempinski Hotel, Eden Residences—Capitol’s luxury apartments—as well as Capitol Piazza and Arcade @ The Capitol Kempinski.

P.S. Ilagay mo na sa bucket list mo pa Singapore - catch a movie at “The Capitol Theatre” para sa mala red carpet experience.

Before air travel took the world in a fly, there was seafaring. People travelled through seas to build homes, conquer wider territories, trade goods and some, just to explore and see new lands. Clifford Pier played a major role in Singapore’s political, economical and social landscape back then. The magnificent pier was built between 1927 and 1933, and was named after Sir Hugh Clifford, the former Governor of the Straits Settlements. Finally, it began witnessing travellers to the Lion City come and go in 1933.

Today, the Fullerton Heritage is preserving the pier’s hawker culture while honouring its historical role as the landing point of Singapore’s forefathers. It is now within the luxurious Fullerton Bay Hotel serving local hawker fares and still using the name, The Clifford Pier.

Not your typical Wonton Noodles. ENG’s, set off as a small pushcart business in the 1950’s and in the 1970s, he finally opened his pioneer stall, ENG’s Wantan Noodle in Dunman Food Centre.
In the year 2012, he was lucky enough to cross paths with an investor that powered the growth of ENG’s and they shifted their stall to a storefront on Tanjong Katong Road, somewhere in the East of Singapore. Today, ENG’s is widely available as they now have outlets scattered across the island so you don’t have to travel to the east to get a taste of this iconic Wantan Mee (Wonton Noodle).

Voting for the dry version, the egg noodles are springy and coated in lard and secret recipe sauce that’s so subtle, yet so tasty. To top it of, there are generous servings of their signature Char Siew Pork and Pork & Prawn Dumplings and of course, their exceptionally spicy chili sauce. A must try!

21/10/2020

Founded in 1951, Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodle, is one, if not, of the pioneers of big prawn noodles in Singapore. Similar to a few other long-rooted, still standing hawker stalls, Wah Kee started as a foodcart along the streets of Singapore serving up hearty bowls of Prawn Noodle Soup. Entered the market using average-sized prawns in pork and prawn broth, the owner decided to switch to pure seafood soup and palm-size prawns in order to distinguish themselves from its competitors. It seemed to be a wise call as till today, they are one of the longest standing food establishments since the 1950s and even gained its listing in the Michelin Restaurant Guide 2019.

They are offering $5, $10, $20 and $25 prawn noodle bowls. Difference lies in the number of big juicy prawns and other seafood thrown into your bowl as the price goes up. Its pure seafood broth is medium bodied with a distinct crustacean savoury sweetness with a spicy hint finish. The prawns are big, fresh and succulent. This hearty prawn soup is accompanied with a plate of noodle of your choice (yellow / white) in secret sauce with sambal chili topped with pork lard croutons, fried shallots and crunchy kang kong. I could testify that this is the best prawn noodles I have ever tried thus far!

💲Price: $20

Making and selling delicious curry puffs since 1958 on a roadside stall outside Novena Church, Rolina’s Traditional Hainanese Curry Puff has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Uncle Tham started making curry puffs at the age of 19 to make a decent living back then. He now owns 2 distinct outlets in Singapore all thanks to his hard work and the recipe coming from a Hainanese sailor in the late 1950s. With the traditional Hainanese recipe preserved for more than 60 years, and passed down to its 2nd generation today, it’s hard to find something that can match their renowned Chicken Curry and Sardine Puff.

Each puff is fried to a crispy golden perfection oozing with generous moist and flavourful fillings. These puffs will surely hype up your taste buds as it is tasty, aromatic and equivalently spicy! A must try empanada version of Singapore!

Bonus: Another special treat that is only available on weekends is their Traditional Glutinous Rice, a special recipe by Mrs Tham.

We bet that most of us here are Taho lovers. After all, who wouldn’t be pleased to hear that iconic “Tahoooo” on weekend mornings, which never failed to make us come crumbling for coins and paint smiles on our faces?

How lucky it is to have something similar here in Singapore? Beancurd or Tau Huay, as they call it, satisfies our “Taho” cravings and it is widely available across the island. But this very stall has transcended through the decades, making it renowned and has constituted a part of Singapore’s history - Rochor Original Beancurd, Since 1960.

Another well-known brand that has weathered the test of time since 1969 - Tiong Bahru Pau is famous for its handmade “Pau” or “Siopao” as how we, Filipinos, know this delicacy. Offering a high-quality Cantonese-style Paus since they started operation in the streets of Tiong Bahru area, they now have a few other outlets scattered across the island.

Some other dim sum best sellers are their leng yong (lotus seed paste), tau sar (red bean paste) baos and siew mai (siomai) which tastes completely different from the ones we have in The Philippines. But a must-try for all the siopao or dim sum lovers out there is their Char Siew Pau. Char Siew in Chinese means barbecued meat and Pau refers to that soft and fluffy white bun we all love. This pork bun comes with a full-flavoured secret recipe barbecue sauce that has the right amount of savoury-sweetness and has big chunks and trimmings of tender pork filling.
