Cold weather tips for our fire apparatus pumps!
1. Primer pump works
2. Open all drains on the pump to drain pump and prevent frozen
pipes and valves.
3. Drain deck-gun piping. The piping above the valve is exposed to
the wind when driving and bust piping.
4. If on the scene of an incident for extended period of time, open
tank to pump, open tank-fill and engage pump to keep water
circulating to prevent freezing of the pump case.
5. Leave nozzles running slightly to prevent nozzle from freezing in
the closed position.
6. Hose reels exposed should be covered with a salvage cover to
prevent freezing and trap heat from the exhaust system.
7. Front-mounted pumps need to be covered with an old turnout
coat of salvage cover to prevent freezing.
8. Change SCBA in cab of truck! The moisture from breathing may
cause the regulator the freeze in the closed position.
9. Check anti-freeze in radiators for extreme temperatures.

In severe cold, pumps may freeze in as little as a 3 mile run!
Be safe, think straight and keep warm!
