Throwback Thursday is back thanks to our volunteer Vicky Jones!
Vicky is helping us to find photos and researching their stories to share with you.

In this photo is John G. Abele and (Emma) Matilda Damme Abele’s on their wedding February 15, 1912, and includes their two attendants, twins Fritz and Anna Damme.

John G. was the son of Reverend John J. Abele, who pastored the Wells Creek Church in Wabaunsee County, and wife Rosa Koehler.

The Abele farm was south of the Wabaunsee Cemetery and where the newlyweds set up housekeeping. In September 1912, the newlyweds purchased the north eighty acres from John F. Conrow and later, in March 1913, purchased eighty acres from A. A. Robinson and subsequently moved onto the farm.

The farm is located east of the Wabaunsee Township Cemetery.
To this union was born three children: Arnold F., born November 12, 1912; Wilma K., July 25, 1917; and Delta Abele who married Kenneth Alt. Arnold and Wilma never married, remaining in the home until the passing of their father in 1973. Matilda Damme Abele passed away in December 1950.

Photograph and genealogy information were donated by Debbie Alt, granddaughter of the Abeles.

What’s in your barn?….😉

Sandie Jensen has had this in her barn in Eskridge for 32 years!

Her and her husband bought the homestead of Joe & Nettie Weekes near Green Ash Road outside of Eskridge, who left it in the barn all those years ago.

Sandie wonders what is the story behind this double tree. (Thanks to Dean Parsons for identifying object!)

If you know any stories of this family we would love to learn the history!
Send us your comment.

Thank you Sandie! This treasure will be in our Blacksmith shop when we bring Main Street back to life at the Farmers Union building!

A special commemoration will take place May 23, 2pm at the Alma Cemetery.

Celebrating the renovation of Block 12 and the er****on of a monument & stone fence honoring the memory of the 81 men, woman & children, some formerly enslaved who were buried in Alma’s Potter’s Field between 1893 & 1962.

Program will include brief talk, music and cemetery tours.

Bring your lawn chair to enjoy this special day.

29108 Cedar Point Road, Alma.

A special thank you to the Native Stone Scenic Byway volunteers that built the non existent stone fence that will be a beautiful backdrop for many years to come.

We love when folks bring in interesting items!

Tim Songs donated this treasure. Advice on “planning for your next fire” ….😳
all good information from not smoking near a Christmas tree 🤣 to what to do in event of atomic attack.

It does point out the wide array of emergencies our Fire Fighters protect us from. Thank you to our Fire Fighters, we appreciate your service.

And speaking of donations, we are missing several Alma High School yearbooks.

As we prepare for 1960-1961 reunion here at the museum June 6, we would like to ask if you have any of these years to donate to our collection:
1949
1951
1958
1960
1965
1966
1969
1970
1971
1972
Your donations can be accepted Tuesday-Saturday 10am-4pm.
Thank you in advance!

Did you know it is World Baking Day 😳

Sounds like a good day for us to thank our bakers that come through when we put out plea for pies!

We have an amazing group of volunteers that bake homemade pies for our special events. And of course topped with local ice cream from Flint Hills Pints 😉 Thank you all for your support! You make our guests feel special and welcomed. There is nothing more heartwarming than the smiles your pies bring!

Enjoy the day…maybe you will celebrate by baking a treat for someone special to enjoy!

1876…the number of friends in Facebook!

We love how technology far has come from the simple telephone!

Social media is important for many reasons.
1) We stay connected to our members that have moved out of state or live outside of the county. If they get a chance to come visit, it’s like they never left.

2) Followers are inspired to come by to visit our little museum, tag along on a tour, or attend an event we are hosting.

3) It is a space where you can share and we can collect stories and photos of the people that built this county.

Most importantly it brings our community together.

We are thank you for following along with us.

Come see us sometime!

As usual…stay tuned😉
