Short Biography.

Frida Lein (1932-2009) was born in Moscow. She loved fine art since her early childhood. At the age 5 she already created her first pictures. Her parents Haya and Eliezer noticed her talent and supported her by placing their young daughter in several Moscow art studious before Second World War.
When war started Frida Lein was just in Elementary school and she was evacuated with her sister Vera and her mother to Ural. Later they moved deeper to North Kazakhstan on the South-East border of the Soviet Union. Her father Eliezer continued to work in Moscow hospital. After the World War II Frida, Vera with their mom returned to Moscow as well.
In 1950-s Frida Lein studied fine art in Moscow School of Art in the name of the year 1905. After graduation Frida worked as an art teacher in High school and later as an artist in a Publishing House named (which name is translated as . Later this Publishing House was renamed to (i.e. ).
Also, Frida Lein painted portraits of famous musicians (Van Cliburn, Leonard Bernstein), which were widely published in a famous Moscow Journal (i.e. ).
A lot of Frida’s art of this period were left in Moscow due to anti-Semitic policy of the Soviet Government in 1970-s when Frida Lein and her family applied for permission to emigrate to Israel. It is worth to note that political officers and administration of the Publishing House organized persecuting campaign against Frida Lein which led to her psychological stress.
In November of 1973 Frida and her family immigrated to Israel. First year she learned Hebrew as all other new immigrants but at the same time participated in expositions. She also had her personal exposition in Tel-Aviv where many of her art works were sold.
Eventually Frida Lein attended special classes in Herzliya (Israel) to be able to teach fine art in Israeli schools. After graduation Frida started teach art and art history in one of Jerusalem schools. Interestingly, before 1970 there were no art classes in Israeli schools. They were only established after a lot of artists and art teachers from a former Soviet Union immigrated to Israel. During her carrier in Israel Frida Lein worked in seven schools in Jerusalem. She loved her work. She did not limit her school activity to teaching art. She also prepared children towards Jewish holidays including Day of Jerusalem and helped them to developed certain artistic entourage.
While working as a teacher Frida Lein continued to develop her own art. The mainstream style of her creative work at that time was portraying of Jerusalem – city where she used to live. Frida depicted houses, court yards, stairs and historic sites. She always left home while having her art tools and folder handy. She made sketches immediately as she noted something interesting.
On top of this Frida Lein continued to paint portraits of famous musicians who visited Jerusalem at that time. Now these portraits can be seen in the exposition of the Israeli National Academy of Music and Ballet in Jerusalem. The most famous one was the portrait of the American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein which was later sold in the US for $10K. Also a lot of Frida’s art works are in schools where she used to teach. Folks there remember her as a great art teacher.
Frida Lein died in 2009 after suffering of severe chronic decease. She is buried at Mount of Olives Jewish Cemetery in Jerusalem by the side of her parents Haya and Eliezer.
