Tear Gas Round, January 6, 2021

The Baltimore Crime Museum has built its collection gradually over many years. Acquiring artifacts connected to criminal activity can be a slow process, as the possession of certain items may itself be illegal or restricted. As a result, many objects enter the collection only after legal ownership can be clearly established or through later donations from individuals involved in or present at historical events.

This tear gas round was deployed during the events of January 6, 2021. It was fired at men from the Baltimore area who were present during the confrontation. The individual at whom the round was fired later recovered and kept the casing as a personal memento of the event.

In time, he chose to donate the object to the Baltimore Crime Museum. Today, it serves as a physical artifact connected to a widely documented moment in recent American history, illustrating how everyday objects can become historical evidence of conflict, law enforcement response, and public disorder.

The Baltimore Crime Museum has repeatedly asked local politicians to complete this form so we can request access to their FBI files.

Department of Justice policy is to neither confirm nor deny the existence of such records unless this form is submitted.

The Baltimore Crime Museum believes that FBI files for political candidates and elected officials should be made public, with appropriate redactions where necessary. Transparency matters.
So far, none of these self-described law-abiding officials has agreed to participate. We will continue to press the issue.

Museum patrons: Which living Baltimore-area politician’s FBI file would you most like to see released? Tell us below, and we will do our best to encourage them to comply.

On March 1, 2017, the lawlessness of the Gun Trace Task Force came to its denouement when seven members of the GTTF—Daniel Hersl, Evodio Hendrix, Jemell Rayam, Marcus Taylor, Maurice Ward, Momodu Gondo, and Wayne Jenkins (*) —were lured under false pretenses to the Baltimore Police Department’s Internal Affairs building on Kirk Avenue and arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

More arrests followed: Sgt. Thomas Allers, Sgt. Keith Gladstone, Detective Victor Rivera, Detective Ethan Glover, Detective Ivo Louvado, and Philadelphia police officer Eric Snell were later arrested.

Glover was acquitted. The rest either pleaded guilty or were found guilty at trial. GTTF members were sentenced to terms ranging from 14 months to 25 years.

Years ago, ASA Leo Wise told a GTTF staffer that the U.S. Attorney’s Office was still investigating. Given that the statute of limitations has lapsed on most of their crimes, this is unlikely to still be true.

The Baltimore Crime Museum is currently working on a Gun Trace Task Force tour.

(*) The 8th man in the graphic is Thomas Allers. He was arrested after the main group.

Baltimore Crime Museum is interested in the crime history of Baltimore and Baltimoreans. If Baltimoreans break the laws of other states or countries, we are interested.
The Baltimore Crime Museum’s criteria for interest are:

A) Did it involve Baltimoreans?
B) Did it happen in Baltimore or the surrounding counties?
C) Did law enforcement or the legal system—both broadly defined—take an interest, regardless of outcome?

Based on this rubric, we have taken an interest in Mildred Harnack, the former Goucher College lecturer and communist who was guillotined by the N***s on this day in 1943 in retaliation for spying on behalf of the Soviet Union as a member of the Red Orchestra.

We are planning a deeper dive into this individual and thought it important to note the anniversary.

135 years ago today, Emma Goldman began her ascent to international fame when The Baltimore Sun covered two speeches she gave in Baltimore. The Baltimore Sun described her as a "brilliant speaker." It was the best coverage the paper would ever give her.

She likely met Michael Cohn around this time. Cohn, a Johns Hopkins medical student and Baltimore anarchist, would go on to support Emma Goldman throughout his life.

is named in honor of Emma Goldman.
