Bay Port, Michigan, sits in the Thumb on Lake Huron’s Saginaw Bay. In this bird’s-eye photo, captioned as early 1900s, the railroad is the town’s spine. A depot marked “Bay Port” faces straight tracks and waiting boxcars. Dirt roads curve past porches, fences, the grain elevator, and the hotel that still stands today. Before paved highways and long commutes, rail schedules set the pace—moving mail, people, and iced fish out of Huron County.

The Great Fires of 1871 - The Burning Great Lakes

In Michigan’s Thumb, the situation could not be worse. The prevailing winds brought embers and dense smoke from the other Michigan fires burning in the west. Within hours over 2,000 lives were lost and millions of acres burned.

Michigan M-25 is States First Scenic Highway in 1940

An M-25 Road Trip is taken around Michigan’s Thumb months prior to World War II. The tourism industry is still recovering from the Great Depression and paving M25 was just completed making it Michigan's 1st Scenic Highway.
