Bethel’s Youth Were Building Community — 1945
In 1945, Bethel’s young people were already taking an active role in shaping their community.
This newspaper article, “Community Activity Center in Pitt Has Youth Program,” describes how local youth asked for help creating more opportunities for recreation and fellowship. Community organizations, churches, the P.T.A., schools, Scouts, and others came together to develop a program.
The Town of Bethel provided financial support, a Teen-Age Club was organized, and young people began meeting regularly for activities, discussions, and social events.
The program focused not only on having fun, but on building character, strengthening families, and giving young people a greater voice in their community.
As one participant put it, the program was young, “but it is strong in spirit and cooperation.”
Today, these roots are still being honored with activities at the Bethel School and North Pitt, the Bethel Youth Center, the Margarett Little Blount Library, the Bethel Resource Center, and many, many more efforts to support the youth of Bethel.
