Sneak peek at Apotropaic art show. Opening reception this Friday! April 26th from 5pm to 8pm (469 Virginia)

Oil and encaustic paintings, plus prints and three dimensional pieces shown in the Historic Elleck Hall Photographic Studio (469 Virginia St - Buffalo NY). Built 130 years ago and open to the public for the first time in decades after a long process of restoration!!!

The series Apotropaic uses s*x images as a form of investigating and expressing archetypal themes that are present in different cultures throughout history. Apotropaic comes from Ancient Greek and it means “to turn away”. It is the basis of belief systems that use amulets and symbols to protect against “evil” and it has a historical relation with the representation of s*x and gender.

Apotropaic is a q***r Latinx Art series that intends to contribute to counterbalance hegemonic and colonizing aspects of history and institutions, questioning notions of originality and authority through appropriation, and exploring the use of s*xuality and gendered symbols in Art History.
