Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Association, Inc. We are volunteers dedicated to preserving the experience of classic train travel in San Diego County, California.

Main Location: Campo Railroad Museum
Secondary: La Mesa Depot Museum The Museum's main facility is located at 750 Depot St, Campo, California, about 50 miles east of downtown San Diego. A restored depot is also operated adjacent to the trolley tracks in La Mesa. Visit the La Mesa Depot Museum at 4695 Nebo Drive, La Mesa, CA (admission is free, donations gratefully accepted) ~ open during various C

ity of La Mesa events such as the Summer Car Show and Christmas in the Village. The Museum is operated by volunteers, who are responsible for every phase of its operation. An FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) approved training program is utilized to safely train brakemen, conductors, fireman and engineers. Indeed, many Museum volunteers have gone on to full-time employment with various railroads and Amtrak. The Campo facility is home to most of the Museum's collection and offers train rides. More than eighty major pieces of railroad equipment are on display, with many of them in various stages of restoration by the volunteers. We are sorry but we have adopted a No Pets Policy, please keep them safe and leave them at home.

A rare look at the JOSEPH LEVIN & SONS locomotive crane No. 7036

This self-propelled crane is one of only five of its type believed to exist today of the hundreds built for industrial service. It is an extremely rare antique, and literally a “scrapyard veteran”.

Built by Brown Hoisting Machinery Company, Cleveland, OH 1920.

Originally steam- powered, it was converted to diesel power around the 1940s with a Cummins engine and had its boom reinforced, increasing its lifting capacity to about 40,000 lbs. (20 tons). As the other locomotive cranes in its class were converted to full electric power, 7036 is unique and a historic rarity. Its boom can traverse 360 degrees and it can move itself under its own power, hence the “locomotive” name.

It was assigned to Navy Yard work, then sold to Rich Foundries in the Los Angeles area, and later bought in the 1940s by Joseph Levin & Sons, who deal in scrap iron & metals, established in 1892. It went to their Huntington Park, CA plant near downtown Los Angeles, and was used in scrapyard work until being retired. It arrived at the Campo Railroad Museum in the early 1980s.

👏 Please give a warm round of encouragement for our 2026 Engineer students as they pursue their goals. Students Ryan, Carl and Dave are pictured with instructors Stephen and James. These three gentlemen are rising to the task of ensuring that train rides will continue to operate at the Museum!

Locomotive Engineer is considered the highest position on our SD&A operations crew. Each Volunteer starts out taking classes and putting in the hours to become a Brakeman.

After some time and with additional training, they can opt to become a Conductor and from there, move on to becoming the locomotive Engineer. All of the required coursework and training is done in-house at the museum.

We truly appreciate having folks step forward to join the museum and pursuing these vital roles. Thank you students and instructors!
