Over the next few months we'll be talking about films and the books that inspired them. I love this artists approach of creating vintage looking book cover art for some classic films. {Images drawn from "Good Movies as Old Books: Films Reimagined as Vintage Book Covers " by Matt Stevens. Dystopian films often have their literary counterparts. This fall we'll screen "Children of Men" which was inspired by P.D. James novel of the same name. The book touches many societal issues: the devaluation of life and the elderly; xenophobia and anti-immigration; totalitarianism and loss of democracy; societal nihilism and the collapse of meaning; gender and the commodification of women; also capitalist exploitation and class division. Add it to your summer reading list.

It's not easy to find Peter Greenaway's films on the stream-o-plex. So I'd encourage watching "A Zed & Two Noughts" (1985) while it's available on Kanopy {FREE with your CF Cedar Falls Public Library card}. It's a dark comedy that follows identical twin zoologists who become obsessed with animal decay and human grief after their wives are killed in a freak car accident involving a swan. Visceral and slightly surreal with a wonderful soundtrack by Michael Nyman.

"The Conversation" is one of Coppola's films that demands more attention. The themes are never more pertinent: putting trust in technology being one of those; what is truth (little questions). The stellar cast for this one includes Gene Hackman, Harrison Ford, John Cazale, Cindy Williams, Teri Garr, Robert Duvall (uncredited). Catch it on Kanopy or purchase a copy (it's worthy of regular viewing).

Hey film friends. Want to call your attention to this gem of a production running this weekend. Tickets are about the same cost as a movie! With this performance the audience seating blends with the set. Very unique. Hope you’ll consider attending.

Lots of directions you could go crafting an alternate ERASERHEAD [screening NEXT TUESDAY at the Hearst Center for the Arts] poster. Today it's Henry holding "the baby" in front of the radiator with his feet planted in the pile of dirt and his head releasing leaves...oh, can't forget the checkered floor. Lots of the films iconic symbols in one depiction.
