Mixed media portrait from 2020. Wanted to focus on what makes black faces beautiful. It's ok to have a big nose and big lips. It's ok not to as well. What makes one truly beautiful is what's on the inside anyways.

Mixed media painting currently on display at the IMSA (Illinois Math & Science Academy). This piece was curated for their new expansion to the school. I had the pleasure of speaking with the kids while i was there and they showed their art to me and a few other artists. They had art that expresses their anxieties and worries for the future (global warming, a competitive job market). They were using art the way it was meant to be, to express feelings and work through emotions. Were they right to feel the way they did? When I trace my roots as a creative, they are from a place of innocents and purity. I was inspired by those before me and wanted to challenge myself for art's sake.  I hope to find the answer one day but as of now, I am grateful for life. I am starting small and appreciating the small that one day it will grow on fertile ground. I am appreciating every stroke as one step closer to my destiny.

Who Wrote This Song

By Maui Jones

Who wrote this song?

It’s too loud.

How do I find the beauty in the dark of my soul?

If I can just find my voice…

Please make it stop.

You say I am a thug as I cry over the broken body that lies before me

I pull back the hood and they have my face

My ears hurt. Please no more.

Please don’t make me sing this song anymore.

I want to feel free.

Then I hear a voice...it is so familiar.

You is free! You is free!

I say to the voice, “Look at my wrists. They are shackled. How am I free?”

Because you is free.

“Look at the rope on my neck. I can’t breathe. How am I free?”

Because you is free.

Look at the tears on my face. Listen to the song. How can you say I am free?

I say that you are free because you are me.

The song has stopped. I sit in the silence.

It is too quiet.

I think I will write a song.
