On September 2, 1944, then-Lieutenant George H.W. Bush was shot down while flying a combat mission over Chichi-Jima in the Pacific.

After completing his bombing run, President Bush bailed out over the ocean and was later rescued by the USS Finback. The experience remained with him for the rest of his life and became an important part of his story of service, courage, and gratitude.

Today, we remember that defining moment and honor the service and sacrifice of President Bush and all those who served alongside him during World War II.

Twenty-one years ago, Hurricane Katrina made landfall along the Gulf Coast, leaving communities across the region facing extraordinary loss and devastation.

In the weeks that followed, Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton joined forces, establishing the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund to help communities recover and rebuild. Their partnership ultimately raised more than $130 million in support of colleges, churches, libraries, and other vital community institutions.

On this anniversary, we remember those whose lives were forever changed by Katrina and honor the strength, generosity, and resilience that carried communities forward.

Happy ! 🐾

From Millie and her famous litter of puppies to the many four-legged companions who called the Bush family home, dogs were always part of life with President and Mrs. Bush.

Today, we’re celebrating the joy, loyalty, and snuggles they bring to our lives — and remembering one very special First Dog and her pups. ❤️🐶

We are saddened by the passing of Dolly Parton, whose extraordinary life was defined not only by her talent, but by her generosity and deep commitment to others.

President and Mrs. Bush greatly admired Dolly’s philanthropic spirit, her devotion to community, and especially her lifelong dedication to education and literacy. Through her work and service, she opened doors of opportunity for countless children and families and left an enduring impact far beyond the stage.

The George & Barbara Bush Foundation joins people around the world in celebrating her remarkable legacy and extending our condolences to her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush often said that parents are a child's first and best teachers. That's why parent education is one of the four essential components of comprehensive family literacy. By equipping parents and caregivers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to support learning at home, these programs help strengthen the entire family.

One of the Barbara Bush Fund for Family Literacy's inaugural grantees, [First Teachers Family Literacy Program] in Biddeford, Maine, puts Mrs. Bush's belief into practice through its Active Parenting classes, helping parents build confidence, strengthen their advocacy skills, and support their children's success.

We're proud to support programs that carry forward Barbara Bush's vision of empowering families through literacy.

For 150 years, the Texas A&M University community has answered the call to serve, lead with character, and contribute to something greater than themselves.

President George H.W. Bush believed deeply in the power of service and in what can be accomplished when people come together for the good of others. We’re proud to see that spirit reflected in the university’s newest video, which includes a glimpse of President Bush on campus and our CEO, Alice Gonzalez Yates, welcoming viewers to the George H.W. Bush Presidential Center.

We are saddened by the passing of Don Wilson, Seventh Archivist of the United States, and a trusted advisor and close friend to President and Mrs. Bush. His leadership was instrumental in establishing the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, and his contributions helped preserve President Bush’s legacy for generations to come.

Don leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service, leadership, and devotion to country in the finest tradition of American public service. Our thoughts are with his devoted wife Patsy, his family, and all who knew and loved him.
