Today we celebrate the birthday of Vincent van Gogh, born in 1853. Van Gogh moved to Arles in the south of France in 1888 to form an artist community. Here he began to apply a new high-keyed palette and staccato brushwork to his earthy subject matter and portraits of locals, such as The Smoker (Room 13, north wall). This was around the time of his fateful relationship with Gauguin, his first bout of mental illness, and his dedication to creating images of almost religious intensity.

Pablo Neruda a poet from Chile wrote a collection of poems called '20 Poemas de Amor y una Cancion Desesperada' ('20 poems of love and a desperate song'). Poem number 20 is transcribed here:

Puedo escribir los versos mas tristes esta noche.

Escribir, por ejemplo: "La noche esta estrellada, y
tiritan, azules, los astros, a lo lejos".

El viento de la noche gira en el cielo y canta.

Puedo escribir los versos mas tristes esta noche.
Yo la quise, y a veces ella también me quiso.

En las noches como esta la tuve entre mis brazos.
La bese tantas veces bajo el cielo infinito.

Ella me quiso, a veces yo también la quería.
Como no haber amado sus grandes ojos fijos.

Puedo escribir los versos mas tristes esta noche.
Pensar que no la tengo. Sentir que la he perdido.

Oír la noche inmensa, mas inmensa sin ella.
Y el verso cae al alma como al pasto el rocío.

These two paintings were owned by Julius Mosberg and were identified from photos of the interior of the house at Lessingstrasse 26. They were exhibited in the Mosberg exhibit at the Archives of the City of Bielefeld.
