Betty Reid Soskin, an extraordinary Rosie, National Park Service Ranger, and wise, iconic woman who transcended more than a century of history, passed away peacefully today at the age of 104. Some of our Willow Run Rosies had the honor of meeting her during trips to California, when we enjoyed friendly rivalry with the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park, where Betty worked into her 100's, over our mutual Guinness World Record victories. In tribute, we can do no better than to quote a few of Betty's own words of wisdom:
"I know that the future is created by people like me... by what we do or fail to do in moments in the present."
"I don't think I'll be remembered as a park ranger. I want to be remembered as Betty. My name is Betty and this is my brief but spectacular take on signing my name to freedom."
"I've aged in two important ways since becoming a park ranger: The first: I've outlived my rage without losing my passion over the past decade, and that's a gift!"
"I am so aware that I'm living in my final decade. I'm so aware that every single minute of every hour has to have meaning for me... If I don't get it right, I don't have time to do it over." (She was 96 when she said this.)
"[We] can only do what we are able to do at any given time and under a single set of circumstances, and we must not feel unsuccessful in any one attempt. The opportunity will rise again to do something else, and the courage to act will rise with it."
Betty, you are alive so long as you are remembered, and you are truly a person we will never forget!
