In 1880, James Perkins was born in Lexington, Kentucky to parents who were former slaves. His father was John Jacob Perkins, a Standardbred trainer. Perkins got his nickname “Soup” because of his love for the food.

“Soup” was a jockey who began racing at age 11 at a northern Kentucky race track situated in Latonia (near Covington and Newport).

In 1895, he rode the horse, Halma, to a win in the Kentucky Derby. After the race, the 90-pound African-American was asked his age; he replied, “going on sixteen.” At 15, Soup Perkins and Alonzo Clayton share distinction of being the youngest jockeys to win the Kentucky Derby

On the opening day of races at the old Kentucky Association track, October 16, 1893, Perkins rode five horses to victory before “a large crowd.” His riding contract paid $5,000 annually.

Old Hillside Bourbon Company Black History Facts

Alonzo “Lonnie” Clayton is the youngest jockey to ever win the Kentucky Derby. He won this race in the year 1892 at the age of 15 and still holds the record as the youngest winning rider.

Clayton was born March 27, 1876 in Kansas City, Mo. As a boy, his family relocated to North Little Rock, Ark., where he then changed course by running away to Chicago at 12 years of age. While in the Windy City, Clayton took up horse riding following in his older brother’s footsteps. He eventually earned the right to begin racing horses.

On May 11, 1892, Clayton rode the horse Azra and took the victory in the Kentucky Derby at just 15 years old. Riding the same horse, Clayton also won the Clark Handicap, the Travers Stakes, and other notable races.

By 1900, Clayton’s career was all but done as racism forced Black jockeys, who had dominated the sport for centuries out of horse racing altogether.

Despite being instrumental in the development of thoroughbred horse racing, the last African-American jockey to win a major thoroughbred horse race was in 1909.
Clayton attempted a comeback in 1904 but a scandal involving race fixing ended his career.

Clayton moved to Little Rock, Ark., and purchased the Engelberger House, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Clayton passed in 1917 at the age of 40.

Old Hillside Bourbon Company black history facts

In sports the term the “G.O.A.T.” (greatest of all times) will forever be debated. Can you imagine a basketball G.O.A.T.” debate and Micheal Jordan’s name wasn’t mentioned? To take it a step further imagine if the participants had never heard of Micheal Jordan.

Well Isaac Burns Murphy is considered the greatest Jockey of all time and most have never heard of him.

He was the first jockey to win three Kentucky Derbys and was the only jockey to win the Kentucky Oaks, Kentucky Derby, and the Clark Handicap all in the same year. This amazing feat was accomplished in 1884.

He won over 44% (628 of 1,412) of his races which is a record that most experts agree will never be broken.

Mr. Murphy was the jockey when “Kingman” won the Kentucky Derby. To date, this is the only horse owned by an African American, Dudley Allen, to win the Kentucky Derby.

He was the first jockey inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, NY. He is also one of only two African American jockeys to have received this honor.
