BRETT DAY WINDHAM
GATHERING THE CHESAPEAKE

For the Portal series of nine cyanotypes, Windham worked with silhouettes of oysters, whelk, and crab shells mailed to her studio in Rhode Island from the Academy Art Museum and Zach Gallery and in-painted watercolor scenes of Eastern Shore landmarks and vistas.

BRETT DAY WINDHAM
GATHERING THE CHESAPEAKE

Over the course of this past year, Windham worked with flora and fauna specimens from the Chesapeake Bay, collected by Zach Gallery, the Academy Art Museum, and students from The Gunston School’s Chesapeake Watershed Semester. Armed with these specimens, her research on growth zones and plant habitats, and open-source images from Google Earth, she conjured a place she had never yet visited: the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

25 cyanotypes with watercolor, mounted on board, glue, custom oak vitrine, metal trestle legs, collected natural objects, cyanotype-dyed pad, plexiglass. Dimensions variable to installation.

"Often an artist is not fully aware of the gravity their storytelling brings to the canvas. They are essentially a vehicle compelled to create as a release of energies both conscious and subconscious that cannot be contained.”
