On 1 March 1848 Peter Vandervort was awarded a patent to the SE ¼ of land in section 8, town of Eden, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. He built a log cabin on the property and lived there with his wife Maria and their seven children.
Besides attending to his farm, Peter was well known in the area as a Methodist preacher.
Two of his children, Michael and Ann Vandervort, became physicians.
Michael Vandervort took over the property after his parents died. In 1886 Michael sold the property to Joseph, Charles and Peter Reinhardt and moved to Oklahoma. Joseph Rinehart lived on the property for eight years. Joe was a cattle broker, and started a meat market in Eden. Joe sold his meat market to Joseph Seybold, and in 1893 he sold his land and home to Hugh Martin.
When the old house was scheduled for demolition, the log cabin was discovered still intact and was sold to a couple from southern Wisconsin. When the couple re-constructed the log cabin, Country Living magazine did a feature article for their March 2002 issue.
A copy of the original magazine can be seen at the Eden Historical Society, open this weekend, 1-4 pm.

Justus DaLee (1793 – 1878) was an American folk artist born in Pittstown, New York. He married Mary Fowler October 13, 1...

Justus DaLee (1793 – 1878) was an American folk artist born in Pittstown, New York. He married Mary Fowler October 13, 1816 at White Creek, New York, and they had ten children.

He served as a musician in the War of 1812 and was a professor of penmanship.

He was known for his miniature naïve art side portraits. The majority of his work was for families in New York and New England.

Unfortunately, Justus Dalee lost his eyesight, and had to move to Eden, Wis. to live with a daughter, Harriet DaLee Odekirk Williams.
He died on January 5, 1878, in Eden, Wisconsin and is buried in the Odekirk Cemetery, Eden, Wisconsin.

Stop in at the Eden Historical Society to see his twelve Fowler family portraits. He painted miniatures of his in-laws, Amon and Ruth Fowler and their ten children. The Fowler portraits were done in the 1830s and 1840s.

We’ll be open this weekend Friday, Saturday, & Sunday from 1-4 pm. Stop in while you’re shopping for bargains!!
