The Artnauts is an artist collective that uses the visual arts as a tool for addressing global issues while connecting with artists from around the world. The name derives from combining the words “art” and “astronaut” as a way to describe the process of exploring uncharted territory in the world at large (for example, currently the collective has an exhibition that is traveling down the Amazon River for three years to over 30 remote sites). The name also denotes the practice that is “not” art as usual, going beyond the confines of the traditional or conventional art world and blurring the boundaries between art, activism, and social practice. The Artnauts have worked at the intersection of critical consciousness and contemporary artistic practice to impact change for almost two decades with over 150 exhibitions on four continents.

Synopsis of the film:
For 30 years, the Artnauts — a global collective of artists — have brought contemporary art to places where the elite art world rarely reaches: the Colombian Amazon, Rwanda’s Kigali Genocide Memorial and the Korean Demilitarized Zone. Rooted in the belief that art must be understood within its social context, the collective’s 256 exhibitions have become sites of burgeoning friendship, reflection and exchange. At its center is founder Dr. George Rivera, whose early encounters with racism and classism planted the question that continues to drive the Artnauts: How do we stop hate with love?

"Within the ongoing conversation in art about reckoning and repair, the Artnauts have shown us again and again how art can create a space for collective reflection, a lit room in which to gather amidst the darkness. A documentary film is one more way for them to further this message, crossing borders of geography and identity to inspire connection, conversation and action."

Before every trip Artnauts meet to double check work and pack for the exhibition. The Artnauts are landing today in Oaxaca and will begin hanging the show for Crossing ~ Cruzando at CASA DE LA CULTUREA OAXAQUEÑA in Oaxaca, Mexico. Exhibition runs October 22 - November 22 with the opening reception on October 22nd 4-6pm.

About the Venue — Casa de la Cultura Oaxaqueña
The Casa de la Cultura Oaxaqueña (CCO), housed in the historic former Convent of the Seven Princes (Ex Convento de los Siete Príncipes), is an important cultural institution dedicated to artistic expression, education, and community engagement. Through exhibitions, workshops, and public programming, the center fosters creative exchange across generations and disciplines. As host of Crossings / Cruzando, the institution provides a meaningful setting for an international exhibition exploring the transitions and connections that shape our shared human experience.

About the Exhibition — Crossings ~ Cruzando
Life is a continual passage from where we are to where we are going. Birth marks our first crossing, and each transition that follows shapes our experience of being human. Presented during Mexico's Día de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead), Crossings / Cruzando draws inspiration from traditions of remembrance and the symbolic return of those who have died. For the Artnauts, crossing extends beyond life and death to encompass personal, psychological, cultural, and geographical transitions. Through diverse artistic perspectives, the exhibition explores the boundaries we navigate, the connections we form, and the transformations that inform our individual and collective human experience.

EARLY in September, the Artnauts gathered at Swoon Art House to see a private, preliminary screening of "Art Not As Usual" the story of the Artnauts collective. Shooting began in 2022, so it was a huge milestone and special celebration as we ended production. A moving history of the collective, the film documents it's origins, mission, and impact. Filmmaker, Annie Eastman, was on hand along with Artnauts' founding members Dr George Rivera and Beth Krensky, and producers, Martha Russo and Pamela Beverly-Quigley. All 5 will be at the Denver Film Festival for a post screening Q&A.

Eastman began her career as a documentary filmmaker working as a Portuguese Translator/Associate Producer on “They Killed Sister Dorothy”, a courtroom-drama set in the Brazilian Amazon over 3 years (HBO Films, Emmy Nominee for Best News & Journalism Documentary 2009). Her directorial debut, “Bay of All Saints” follows a group of spunky single mothers and their refrigerator repairman as they're displaced from their homes in the “water slums” of Brazil. It premiered in competition at SXSW Film Festival and won the Audience Award for Best Feature Doc 2012. She directed and edited an episode of “the Election Effect” (Shine Global / Paramount Plus), a set of stories about how teenagers are affected by our polarized political climate. She has directed and edited over 80 impact stories for non-profit organizations on individuals overcoming generational poverty through education, living with chronic and life-threatening illness, or managing mental illness and addiction. She has two mid-sized kids and a regular-sized husband and lives in Denver, CO.

HI FRIENDS *Just a reminder, the previously scheduled Panel Discussion with local Artnauts discussing works in the exhibition "Rhizome: Origins" is not being held tomorrow on the 8th. Artists spoke instead on September 19th. Please watch for future videos.

"Artnauts: From the Archive" exhibition includes works drawn from the Artnauts Collective Archive, featuring 95 works from 27 exhibitions from 2001-2026. Exhibit gives a glimpse into how the Artnauts exhibit their works internationally. The Artnauts, formed in 1996, have had more than 220 artists in the collective, participating in over 256 exhibitions, in 27 countries on 5 continents. The Artnauts have worked at the intersection of critical consciousness and contemporary artistic practice to impact change for 30 years.

The traveling "Artnauts: From the Archive" exhibition runs concurrently with Artnauts' foundational history exhibition, "Rhizome: Origins", taking place at the CU Art Museum, University of Colorado at Boulder.

"This triptych of paintings reimagines a city's transit infrastructure of roads, railways, and bridges as a living, rhizomatic organism. In our daily lives, these pathways have become invisible systems we navigate without thought. When viewed as illuminated networks, these systems reveal a working human rhizome in constant motion. Each glow from a set of headlights reveals the path of a highway and every aircraft landing light serves as a luminous thread in the night sky within our human-made infrastructure, connecting disparate points and people across the globe.

For the Artnauts, these pathways represent the origins of our collective action; they are the physical channels that allow us to bypass both traditional hierarchies in the art world and barriers in social/political institutions. By depicting horizontal networks of travel, this work celebrates the interconnection and global solidarity required to deliver messages of creative resistance to communities worldwide." - Claire Jackel
