Enosburgh Historical Society We present monthly historical programs and operate Abe’s Cabin and the Historical Museum Come join us! Located near Lincoln Park

The Enosburg Historical Society meets the 4th Monday of every month, from April-October, at 7pm, at the Emergency Services building in Enosburg. The Historical Society has under its jurisdiction:

The Museum & Caboose - Open Saturdays from 10-2, beginning the 1st Saturday in June, through October, or by appointment

Abe's Log Cabin - Open on Tuesday evenings in the summer, during band concerts, from 7-8 pm, or by appointment.

In November of 1927, Vermont experienced the single most destructive natural disaster in the state's entire recorded history, and it reshaped how the state approached everything from infrastructure to emergency government for decades afterward.

The Great Flood of 1927 struck after days of unusually heavy rainfall overwhelmed rivers across Vermont, destroying bridges, roads, railways, and entire town centers in a matter of hours. Eighty four people lost their lives, and the damage was so extensive that the state's governor at the time refused federal assistance, insisting Vermont would rebuild itself, a decision that became a defining moment in the state's identity of self reliance.

The flood ultimately led to major changes in Vermont's approach to flood control and infrastructure planning, including new dams and reservoirs built specifically to prevent a disaster of that scale from happening again.

Did you know Vermont's governor once turned down federal disaster aid, insisting the state would rebuild entirely on its own? 🌊🏔️
