Lynda Engstrom is a gifted fine artist comfortable in a wide variety of media and styles. The definition of an American original, she creates evocative images of everyday life imbued with an understated dramatic force. Through extraordinary manipulation of space and light, her work hovers between the theatrical and the strangely familiar. Shown here are not only her most iconic oils and watercolor
s, but also a selection of drawings and sketches made in preparation for these works. BIO: Lynda is a New York artist who lives and works in Manhattan. She studied at Pratt Institute and the University of California at Berkeley. In addition to her fine art career, she's an award-winning Art Director and Web Designer and with a client list that includes CBS and The New York Times. Lynda exhibits new paintings every summer in towns all over Fire Island. She's had painting shows at the Aldrich Museum, the Waverly Gallery and WomanArt Gallery in NYC and Studio North in Baltimore. Her deft brushwork and keen draftmanship won her a coveted assignment as a painter for Jeff Coons for a recent Guggenheim Museum exhibition. Engstrom is extremely prolific and versatile in a wide variety of media, including oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, collage, graphite and pen & ink. Her printmaking skills include woodcut, wood engraving, etching, drypoint, silk screen and lithography. Her style runs the gamut from semi-abstract to impressionist to "evocative photo-realism". Her landscapes have often been described as reminiscent of Edward Hopper, her deft touch effortlessly summoning the mood of this great American painter with unselfconscious, innocent directness. In another style, her abstract oils have been said to evoke the spatial treatment and "joie de vivre" brushstrokes of Larry Rivers. As a colorist she draws heavily upon the inspiration of Matisse, and derives her sense of beguiling creativity from the great contemporary British master David Hockey. Engstrom's subject matter is as varied as her media and styles. She works in "series" and over the years has produced an abstract series, an erotic series, an ancestral series, a holocaust series, a nature series, and several landscape and seascape series, each with its own remarkable range of prints and drawings. Every summer Ms. Engstrom shows oils and watercolors in an on-going study of seacoast landscapes inspired by the clear light and picturesque atmosphere of Fire Island, where she has long been a summer resident. Lynda is available for commissions and studio visits are welcomed. Paintings and prints are for sale on her website. Contact Info: phone: 212.724.3961 email: [email protected]
