Machine and hand stitching on reclaimed textiles
$950
Reclaimed work jackets, pillowcases, cloth napkins, a t-shirt, fabric scraps from my grandmother, embroidery floss, and sewing thread.
During the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet in Chile, women used burlap and fabric scraps to create illustrative textile works, known as arpilleras, documenting the atrocities they endured. Inspired by their practice and my own Chilean heritage, I turned to the materials I had—work jackets, pillowcases, torn clothes, and scraps from my grandmother who immigrated from Chile—to stitch together an illustration of my own time. These textiles, like their subjects, have been overworked, overlooked, and cast aside. Without the histories and memories embedded in their fibers, I would be writing a story in white ink on blank paper.
