Creating is critical in healing and justice. Making crafts settles our bodies and minds, so we can listen and talk. Sharing stories over a beading project feels more like friendly chatter instead of a high-stakes, “tell your story” moment in a formal setting sure to evoke stress.
When we can sit and know that we have five hundred more beads to string to make our creation, the stories feel comforting and help pass the time.
When you have three hours to create something, fear subsides and memories surface. You don’t even have to tell your story in chronological order. You can tell snippets of memories that surface and are released.
