Our Third Annual Jewish Film Festival concludes with Reunion, a beautifully crafted drama about memory, friendship, and the enduring scars of history. Directed by Jerry Schatzberg, the film follows Henry Strauss as he returns to Stuttgart to confront his past and the fate of a childhood friend, recalling a formative bond between two boys from different backgrounds whose friendship is ultimately shattered by the rise of Na**sm. Set against a meticulously recreated Germany of the era, the film reflects on nostalgia, loss, and the ways political upheaval reshapes personal lives, brought to life through richly detailed production design and sensitive performances.

Today, audiences were treated to two powerful screenings and the opportunity to hear directly from the filmmakers and subjects behind the stories. Following Death & Taxes, director Justin Schein and film subject Joy Schein joined us for an engaging conversation about family, legacy, and the complexities of inheritance. Later, director Yael Melamede shared insights into the making of Ada: My Mother the Architect, a moving portrait of pioneering architect and her remarkable impact on the built world.

Thank you to our special guests, festival attendees, and everyone who helped make these conversations so meaningful. Join us next week for three more Jewish Film Festival screenings.

When Caesar Was King: How Sid Caesar Reinvented American Comedy explores the extraordinary life and legacy of Sid Caesar, the groundbreaking comedian who defined early television comedy in the 1950s. Through his landmark show Your Show of Shows, Caesar influenced a generation of writers and performers, including Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Neil Simon, and Woody Allen.

Based on David Margolick’s acclaimed biography, the program traces Caesar’s rise from Yonkers to national fame, offering a vivid portrait of a uniquely Jewish-American entertainment story that helped shape modern comedy.

Week 2 of our Third Annual Jewish Film Festival starts with Once Upon My Mother, a heartfelt and vibrant drama based on Roland Perez’s memoir about growing up in a Sephardic Jewish family in Paris with a clubfoot, and the fiercely devoted mother who refused to let his disability define his future.

Spanning decades from the 1960s onward, the film celebrates family, resilience, and unconditional love, while capturing the humor and intensity of a larger-than-life Jewish mother-son bond. Anchored by a standout performance from Leïla Bekhti, it is both deeply moving and full of warmth and charm.

The Catskills is a warm, funny, and nostalgic tribute to the legendary Borscht Belt resorts that shaped generations of Jewish American culture and entertainment. Through stand-up comedy, personal stories, archival footage, and vintage memorabilia, the film recreates the vibrant world of the family-run hotels and bungalow colonies that inspired classics like Dirty Dancing. More than a look back at a vanished vacation destination, the documentary captures an important chapter in the story of Jewish immigration, community, and American popular culture.
