Here it is! The Lackawanna Cutoff Historical Committee is excited to announce plans to bring the original Delaware, Lackawanna & Western signal bridge back home to Greendell Station. Originally located adjacent to the station near the Wolfs Corner Road overpass, the bridge has been in Phillipsburg since its removal in the early 2000s during the demolition of the Wolfs Corner Road bridge. Phillipsburg Union - PU Tower has generously agreed to transfer ownership of the bridge and support efforts to relocate it back to Greendell.

Visit our website at www.greendellstation.org to learn more about the history of the signal bridge and the plans for its future at Greendell Station.

While much of the logistical planning for the move has already been completed, we still need YOUR help to make this project a reality. The Lackawanna Cutoff Historical Committee is seeking to raise $5,000 to help fund the transportation and relocation of the bridge. Any contribution, no matter the amount, is greatly appreciated.

Donations can be made through our GoFundMe campaign at https://giving.gofundme.com/campaign/805164/donate or by mailing a check payable to:

Fifty years ago today, the Consolidated Rail Corporation was formed out of several bankrupt Northeastern railroads in an effort to stabilize a collapsing freight network and restore reliable rail service across the region. Among the lines absorbed into this new system was the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad. Conrail officially began operations on April 1, 1976, marking a major turning point in American railroad history.

In the years that followed, freight service on many former Erie-Lackawanna routes continued to decline. By 1978, regular freight across the Lackawanna Cutoff had come to an end.

Only a few years later, in 1984, the Lackawanna Cutoff had its rails removed, bringing a definitive end to through service along one of the most impressive railroad alignments ever constructed in the United States.

In this photo, taken on June 23, 1977, we see the Conrail Inspection Train traveling eastbound past Greendell Station, with Conrail E8 4022 in the lead (formerly EL/Erie 833.) Greendell Station had already been in a state of deterioration for many years by this point.

Conrail 4022 (now known as Erie 833) would end up on many Conrail Executive trains for many years to come until it was sold to the New York & Greenwood Lake Railway in the 2000s. The unit was stored in Port Jervis, New York for many years until 2021, where it was moved to the SMS Lines in Southern New Jersey where it remains to this day.

The Lackawanna Cut-Off Historical Committee extends a heartfelt thank you to Don & Marietta Dorflinger for their generous donation of a beautiful glass display case to Greendell Station.

The case fits perfectly in the station and contributes to our growth into a museum space where historic artifacts can be preserved, displayed professionally, and shared with visitors in a secure and engaging way. Their donation will allow guests to more easily view items that help tell the story of Greendell Station, the Lackawanna Cut-Off, and the history of rail transportation in our country.

We are incredibly grateful for Don & Marietta’s support and look forward to putting this wonderful addition to use!

*An extra thank you to our Board Members who helped assist with safely transporting the display case into the station.
