From vast valleys of farmland of the Pennsylvania Piedmont to the towering bridges spanning the Susquehanna River, Michael Allen’s work celebrates the overlooked in an attempt to reveal and understand experience within each environment.

Allen’s painted places are his lived-in spaces, his day-to-day surroundings. It is through his familiarity with these places that he explores deeper connections between the land and its inhabitants. These images, witnessed and collected over many years, are not depictions of one specific moment, but rather a combination of experiences distilled over time. They go beyond a simple record of a place and time; they contribute to and extend a long tradition of landscape painting.

Baltimore-based artist Natan Lawson creates work that bridges hand and machine. Collected textures, objects, and printed matter are digitized, edited, and manipulated before being painted using a custom-built Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine. Composed of an axis-bound mechanical arm that holds a brush and moves across a surface, the machine lays down paintβ€”one stroke at a timeβ€”to create an evolving, intricate, textural surface.

Now on view through August 16!

There are only a few days left to see these tender works by Caleb Kortokrax in 𝘌𝘭𝘴𝘦𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦, on view in the Po***ck Foundation Education Center Gallery!

Kortokrax's paintings preserve solitude, allowing their subjects to remain partially unreachable. They offer not narrative, but atmosphere, an invitation to linger over a gaze, a posture, a moment of stillness.

Catch the exhibition today through Sunday, May 10.

Happy Earth Day!

Celebrate by viewing the stunning prints from "Nature's Gems - American Wildflowers in Their Native Haunts" by Emma Catherine Embury. This stunning gift book, published in 1845, was one of the first to feature native American wildflowers and, along with Embury’s writings, contained 20 intricate hand colored lithographs based on pencil and watercolor studies by noted American artist Edwin Whitefield. Each of these images featured a landscape study in the background, indicating the flower’s native habitat - six, plus the title page, being of the Susquehanna and its tributaries.

View these prints (and much more!) in American Identity: Restoring the Susquehanna River's Artistic Legacy, on view through June 28.

Presence: The Landscapes of Michael Allen is now on view in the Dōshi Gallery!

π˜—π˜³π˜¦π˜΄π˜¦π˜―π˜€π˜¦ brings together two recent bodies of work by Pennsylvania artist Michael Allen. One is a selection of Allen’s signature drawings and paintings from the past 12 years, depicting the atmospheres and fleeting moments within his commonplace. The other is a collection of plein air paintings, painted on-site in single settings, from 2012 to 2018. These two bodies of work commingle in a process of observations gathered over prolonged periods of time and depict the delicate balance between nature and development.

View the works now through July 26.
