Twain lived here from 1874 to 1891 with his wife Olivia and their three daughters. Twain wrote many of his enduring masterpieces while he lived here, including Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. New Free Event! October 1, 7pm (In Person) ~ Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary of the English Language was published in 1755, just 21 years before the Declaration of Independence. In this evening event, Celine Luppo McDaid, the Hyde Director of Dr. Johnson’s House in London, joins us to talk about how the Dictionary came to be and Johnson’s literary legacy in the English-speaking world. This will include responses to his work by fellow lexicographer, Noah Webster, and other literary greats in successive generations, including Webster’s fellow Nutmegger, Mark Twain. On Saturday, August 22, we hosted the 1st Annual Silas Demary Jr. Foundation’s Connecticut Back-to-School Bash and our community enjoyed a festive and fun-filled day. So many hands (and hearts) helped get school supplies into the arms of our Hartford students, and we thank everyone who donated as well as came to the event. We think these kids will be more excited than ever to welcome the new school year! Announcing the 2026 Shortlist for the Mark Twain American Voice in Literature Award (MTAVL). Celebrating its tenth year, the award celebrates fiction that tells American stories in a uniquely American voice. From a curated Longlist of 30 books chosen from 127 submissions, we are thrilled to present the Shortlist of ten remarkable books.
