Welcome Spring!

Dear Friends and Patrons,

It has been some time since last we put pen to paper, and we trust this note finds you in good health and cheerful spirits. Pray do not think us idle in our silence, for we remain very much at work, with hands and minds busily engaged in the preparation of a fine assortment of goods for the approaching spring season.

As the weather softens and the fields begin to stir once more, we take great pleasure in offering several new articles we believe will be of interest. Among them are well-crafted bats for base ball or rounders, accompanied by hand sewn balls of sturdy make. We have also prepared a fresh lot of pin cushions, along with tarred canvas officers style haversacks, made with care and intended for both durability and proper appearance. In addition to these, a variety of other useful and pleasing goods shall be made available, which we trust will meet with your approval.

We do hope you are enjoying the return of spring, with its gentle breezes and lengthening days, and that it brings with it renewed energy and good fortune to you and yours.

We remain, as ever,
Your obedient servants,
Jolliff & Son Mercantile

Cold weather makes for fine work indoors and finer coffee by the fire ☕️

What projects are keeping your hands busy this winter — stitching, mending, carving, tinkering, or setting up your next kit? And are you keeping warm with a good hot cup while you work?

Our store clerk, Mr. Fowler, is pictured here making certain his coffee is properly scalding hot before returning to the day’s labors. A necessity in this kind of weather.

Tell us what you’re working on — and how you take your coffee.

As many of you well know, it has long been the custom in American shops to mark wares with patriotic devices — shields, eagles, and bold lettering — signifying both pride of manufacture and the honest workmanship within. Throughout the 19th century, such stamps adorned boxes, paper wrappings, and goods of every sort, serving as both advertisement and assurance.

Our newest stamp bears a fine United States Eagle accompanied by the words:

“American Manufactured.”

This design is faithfully taken from an original 19th-century example, and we shall now be using it upon many of our packages and goods sent forth from Jolliff & Son Mercantile.

It is a small touch, yet one we believe carries the proper spirit of the age — a mark of domestic industry, patriotism, and quality workmanship.

We thank you, as ever, for your continued custom and support of traditional American trade.

From our friends at Hunter's Home

During the 19th century, food preservation was essential for a family to maintain a quality diet throughout the year. Preserving crops allowed farmers to get crops to market and ensured plantations had enough food to feed their workforce. Plantations used several techniques to preserve their harvest that are still used today, like drying or canning. Preserve their root vegetables using sand. They would dry the sand by setting it out in the sun or cooking it over a fire. This step is important because if there is any moisture in the sand, it will break down the vegetables over time. After getting a wooden box, they would cover the bottom of the box with sand so the vegetables would not touch the wood. The stem side of the vegetable was placed down into the sand, and they were separated so they did not touch. The rest of the vegetables were covered with sand until the box was full. This technique does not alter the texture of the vegetables, like drying, or the taste, as canning does. It’s like eating a freshly picked vegetable out of your garden.
