******************* Planetarium Update ****************************

Followers of the Peters Planetarium,

Hope all is well with each of you so far in 2026, particularly after the harsh weather the past few weeks. The Friends of the Peters Planetarium committee continues to work diligently assisting Hocking College to secure funding for the move and reconstruction of the space to house the upgraded planetarium. Currently the Fairfield Foundation holds over $210,000 in donations in The Peters Planetarium Preservation Fund. To each and every one of you that have contributed to the fund, THANK YOU!

Lancaster City Schools has committed to pay for the professional disassembly of the planetarium which will happen soon after the classes are over this year, likely sometime in May. Thanks to Nathan Hale and the LCS business office for partnering so willing with us in the planned hand off to Hocking College.

Donations secured to date will most likely cover the reassembly of the existing star projector and dome with upgrades to sound, lighting, computer controls and the addition of digital projection. Monies are needed, however, for reconstruction of the space at Hocking to accommodate the planetarium. The estimated cost of reconstruction is in the neighborhood of $900,000. Hocking College with help from the Friends is working on an application to be filed with the Ohio legislature requesting funds from the upcoming biennial capital budget. The application dead line is March 12th.

The Friends have already received written letters of support from individuals, organizations and businesses in the area. The Friends are reaching out to you, our Facebook followers, to consider contacting via email or letter asking state legislators closely aligned both personally and geographically with the project for their support. Contact information below are for those Senators and House members whose constituents will be most positively impacted having this educational resource in their area.

Thank You!

Our work continues as we work towards relocating the Peters Planetarium to its new home at Hocking College. The planetarium will be disassembled and moved from Lancaster High School in the spring of 2026, prior to demolition of the building it is currently in. The dome and equipment will be stored until the building at Hocking College is being remodeled. We are currently still working to obtain funding for the construction renovation of the new site. We are trying to secure funding from the state as well as other grants for the construction. Donations will be used for interior, seating, as well as adding software and digital enhancements to the current, well-maintained projector, to make this a state-of-the-art planetarium.

A fund at the Fairfield County Foundation, the Peters Planetarium Preservation Fund, has already been established, and thanks to those who have donated so far we have raised over $210,000.

Mark your calendar to participate in this year’s 36-Hour Give! All online and in-person donations received between 8 a.m. on Dec. 2 and 8 p.m. on Dec. 3 are eligible for a portion of the special $100,000 match from the Fairfield County Foundation. Don’t miss this great opportunity to support the Peters Planetarium Fund.

Please consider the following levels of giving and recognition opportunities. You may either pledge your support now, with the intent to complete your pledge within the next 6 months, or you may donate now.

Sponsor a Seat for Science: Donations of $500 – $999: Name will be recognized on the chair in the planetarium. Display your own name, or honor or memorialize a loved one. Sponsoring a seat plaque does not include the right to sit in a specifically-named seat during public programs. (Limit of 50)

The Wall of Stars: Donations of $1000 or more: Name will be listed as a donor on our Wall of Stars. The Wall of Stars will pay tribute to those making donations of $1000 or more, our way of gratefully acknowledging our donors’ role in breathing new life into this treasured landmark. The size of the donor name(s) on the wall will correspond with the giving level.

Celestial Level Sponsorship: Donations of $10,000 or more. In addition to being recognized on the Wall of Stars, you will be invited to an exclusive donor reception and be one of the first to see the completed planetarium and view a show. Donors of $10,000 or more will also be recognized at programs throughout the year via print or digital media.

Galaxy Level Sponsorship: Donations of $50,000 or more. Naming opportunities for spaces, equipment, etc. in the Planetarium are available for those interested in contributing at this level. We are delighted to speak with you about opportunities that resonate with you or your loved ones. You will also be invited to an exclusive donor reception and be one of the first to see the completed planetarium and view a show.

Smaller contributions are no less valuable, and we thank you for your gift, no matter the size. All donations go directly to the relocation and renovation of the planetarium and programming.
Contributions may be made online with the QR code or at www.fairfieldcountyfoundation.org , select Donate and choose Peters Planetarium Preservation Fund.

If you prefer to mail in a donation, please send your check with a donor form attached.

A group of inspired amateur astronomers will be setting up their telescopes at Alley Park Saturday, September 27th. If you are interested be there around sunset for an opportunity to take in celestial wonders that nature has to offer. It looks like the weather should be providing us a decently clear sky. A couple folks from The Friends of the Peters Planetarium will be there as well to answer any questions you may have concerning the current status of the planetarium move to Hocking College. The group be setup along and on the east side Old Logan Road in the field parking area. The Parks folks should also be providing hot chocolate.

Today is the 100th anniversary of the first planetarium on planet earth!

Milestones this past year for finding a new home for and funding The Peters Planetarium project include securing a letter of intent for Lancaster City Schools to pass the planetarium to Hocking College early to mid 2026. Lancaster City Schools has verbally agreed to fund the professional disassembly of the planetarium for transport. Fairfield Foundation donations for the planetarium reassembly and technical upgrades in it's new home are currently at nearly $200,000.

Thanks to all our planetarium supporters, benefactors and citizens of Lancaster and the surrounding area for your generous donation dollars.

Donations can be made at the Fairfield Foundation at the link below...

For our friends and followers of the Peters Planetarium see the donor letter that was generated recently which includes the latest information leading up to and as to the current status of the project thus far. If you know anyone that may be interested, an individual, business or organization please pass this on to them. The Friends of the Peters Planetarium will keep you updated throughout the months and years ahead as to what is happening with the planetarium.

For all of those who have donated to the preservation fund,
Thank You!

As you read through the letter, remember no donation is too small to give and for those fortunate enough to give a little more, what better way to donate than a seat for the new planetarium that recognizes you, your family, business or organization with an arm rest nameplate.

12/07/2024

Thanks to all who gave to the Fairfield Foundation 35 hour fund drive toward the Peters Planetarium Preservation Fund. The fund received $14,390 during this drive not including matching funds. Will update this page when the matching dollar total comes in. For those who gave $500+ this ensures that a seat nameplate is yours in recognition to you, yours or for your organization. The Friends of the Peters Planetarium will be working throughout the new year and beyond adding donations to the fund as well as assisting Hocking College in any way we can with grant proposals. Also, we had a great meeting recently with state Senator Tim Schaffer who is open to promoting the planetarium effort and, in any way he can, help with future funding opportunities.
